This will be the third year that a lucky player will receive the Louie Roberts A/E Award at the Derby City Classic.

Now, I'd always known it as the "Louie Roberts Award," until I checked out the Derby City Classic website.

Here's what I discovered: "Louie Roberts was never a Hall of Famer, but certainly did a lot for pool. He was both full of action and very entertaining to watch."

AND, "Recipients of the A/E event win FREE ROOM and FREE ENTRY FEES for life to the Derby City Classic." WOW! :D

This year's DCC was a huge success. Because of the grand turnout, the presentation of the Louie Roberts A/E Award will be delayed a few weeks because there were so many eligible candidates at the action-friendly DCC. The two requirements for eligibility go to the player who provided the most: ACTION and ENTERTAINMENT.

The DCC provides a venue where players like Louie Roberts would have shined with his quick wit, dazzling entertainment, not to mention his skills on a field of green. There are AT LEAST three names who are in the running, from what I've been told, with several other noteworthy mentions.

I started a poll with the "current" top three players' names and added another category labeled "Other." The DCC ain't over yet, and I heard they're keeping the tables up at the Executive West Hotel until MONDAY! ;)

Please take the time to vote for one of the selections. If you select "Other," post the player's name.

This is a GREAT award. Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan and North Carolinean Young Gun Tony Watson are the past two winners, so they're out of the running.

I'm going to vote based on hearsay. It would be nice to hear from responders who actually attended the DCC this year, as well as those of us who weren't able to make it, but did read all about it right here on AzBilliards Discussion Forum! :p

Remember, vote for the player who provided the most ACTION and ENTERTAINMENT! :)

Drake, I also heard that Gabe Owen was mighty busy at the DCC! ;)

The two qualities which are key for the Louie Roberts A/E Award are: ACTION and ENTERTAINMENT. Keith's told me that Gabe's a straight-shooting player who shows now fear. The only time I've personally ever seen him play is in tournaments. I would have liked to see Gabe having fun at the DCC! :D

And how about Cliff Joyner and Corey Deuel? I have read MANY action reports about both of these guys.

Scott Frost stays in action no matter where he lays his hat. I mean, at the recent '04 Open, he preferred to spend his time at Q-Masters engaged in games of stake. He seems to enjoy himself immensely every time I've seen him on the tournament trail, and he is ALWAYS in the pit.

Sparky brings a sense of humor with him whever he goes, and I like his style. He always puts a smile on my face when I hear him woofing! If he's playing his game, nobody has to like it against Sparky.

Little John is becoming a young legend, I think. From New Orleans to Detroit, this kid gets around and generates excitement.

I'd like to hear from those who were actually at the DCC, though. The only knowledge I have is from hearsay and reading the pool-related forums.

BTW, I heard the competition at the upstairs mini tournaments was STRONG this year. I really enjoyed watching those tourneys. AND it's definitely a great way to grind out expense money for the trip! Between the three main events, mini tournaments, action, and all of the rest of the festivities, it must have been a blast!

BTW, I voted for Sparky! :)

What about Gabe?? I heard from a friend that he has stayed in action all week.

Howdy Drake,
off the topic:it has been several years ago when I first saw Gabe in action. He busted a very good bar box player named Mr. Gunther from Adrian,Michigan on Bar Box.Another time I had seen him acting very bold( taunting him for action) with Leil Gay.Cheers

I think Cliff Joyner might be a good choice, he's always in action no matter where he is, and always draws a crowd.

No doubt about it, Cliff Joyner is best known as an action player, rather than a tournament competitor, even though he's won quite a few titles, most recently last year's double-hitter in Reno.

The award, which consists of a FREE ENTRY and HOTEL for the life of the DCC, is based on two eligibility requirements, ACTION and ENTERTAINMENT. It's actually a tribute to Louie Roberts. Choosing only one must be quite difficult, considering the 27/7 action and entertainment going on this year.

I am always entertained watching Cliff in the pit, and I find his one-pocket skills phenomenal.

When my home boys return from Louisville, I'm hoping to get a recap of the Derby City Classic action. Those who were there are the ones who would be able to provide the best opinion about which player was the BEST action entertainer this year a la St. Louis Louie Roberts.

Is this vote limited to people who didn't attend this year's DCC?

All of the players on the short list are good choices. I'd add Gabe Owens to the list. These four, IMO, were the front runners. Scott Frost was my #1 pick before I left the Derby with Gabe closing in with his impending Basavich matchup. He and Gabe, IMO, were in more entertaining action mostly partly because their play is much better. But obviously, one man's entertainment is another man's snoozer.

There were a lot of other people at the DCC that I informally polled who watched mucho action, and Scott's name came up more often than any other.

This poll is open to all: those who went and those who did not.

Those who went may be able to provide more insight, however, since they were there.

Those who were unable to attend can vote, also, based on reading posts on AzBilliards Discussion Forum and/or other means.

Due to the abundance of action players who entertained the pool fans at the DCC this year, there are other players who are also being considered. That is why I added the "Other" category. Some of the other names mentioned were: Gabe Owen, Cliff Joyner, and Corey Deuel. However, Little John, Sparky, and Scott Frost have the lead as of last evening, but the final winner will be decided in a couple of weeks.

I still vote for Sparky...........he was one of the above mentioned that i witnessed wolfing to anyone that walked by. Scotty was quiet, Lil john didnt provide as much entertainment as say ALex and Tony the last 2 years. Hell Alex ws still the best this year IMO with his antics int he hallway and then tlaking before Mika and Bartram matched up. But since he won already i say Sparky!!!!!

Lil John or Tony Chohan. All the others didn't gamble close to them. Jon Hennessey would actually be a close third. Sparky I only saw play twice. I think he broke even or lost to TJ from Ohio giving 8-7 and the break. Then the next day he put a sign above the table....9 BALL ONLY $5000 MIN BET. Hennessey obliged & bar b qued him. Then 15 minutes later Hennessey beat Shane McMinn. I have never seen Hennessey play as good & consistent as he did at the DCC so maybe his game has gone up a notch.

This same night, John Hager Jr beat Tony Chohan playing even 10 ball. Both played fairly well....Chohan out broke Hager but Hager was more consistent and won in the end. Hager is still one of my favorites to watch & bet on. He gets the cheese.

Also same night Cliff gave Billy Encardona 10-5 9-5 and won. Unfortunately for all of you wanting more info, I don't have any cause I had no interest in watching that.

Josh Ariah (SP?)

Does it have to be a player that wins this award? Josh, who got 3rd in the World Series of Poker and won $1.5 million, was staking everyone at the tournament. I didn't see him on Saturday though. He wasn't as much of an a**hol* as he was on ESPN. I finished up $50 on him side betting, make that $1,499,950. Ha!

Alex Pagauylan hands down

In tournament, in action, promoting action, or relaxing he is always the most relaxed, entertaining , and all around positive personality. When he starts woofing he draws a crowd. No one else can do that. I watched him on and off for 9 days and he was on top of his game in tournament and gambling. He sure got Ronnie Allen and Harry Platis and smiled in his way all the way to the bank although he settled out of court for less than what he won. I saw none of that entertaining from anyone else. Ronnie Allen could be added but he is more grumpy than entertaining but his whining is more entertaining than most other people. Of course he has practiced it a lot longer than most. I don't know how they pick the winner but I sure hope this forum has nothing to do with it cause if you were not there you should not be voting. If they allowed heresay in court no one would win or lose fairly.

I posted a reply then tried to vote, said I already voted. I had not. Put me down for Alex P. by far and away the best. And I was there 9 days.

Alex won 2 years ago, no need for repeat winners with all the perks attached to the award.

If he deserves it , so what. No need? Glad ball players can be repeat winners. Barry Bonds won enough mvp's and I guarantee he gets a lot of perks. He still gets voted for and wins as he deserves it, as does Alex. Prior winners should have nothing to do with it, if it does then make it a rule , no repeat winners.

Why isn't Efren listed? Does the recipient of this award have to be loud, or can their play be entertaining enough on its own? I wasn't there, so I don't know, but I'm guessing that with winning the match against Cliff, winning the one-pocket tournament, winning the 9-ball tournament, finishing well in the bank-pool tournament, and winning the all-around title, he had to be pretty damn entertaining to watch this past week.

Good point

That is a good point he sure as hell was plus he was honored at the hof banquet and inducted into one pocket hall of fame. But he never made a speech or for that matter hardly muttered a word don't know if that disqualifies him or not. LOL.

Nfty9er, I agree that Alex is quite the funny guy. However, the Louie Roberts A/E Award is granted to a NEW player each year.

Nfty9er, Efren is always entertaining to those of us who enjoy watching him perform his "magic" on a field of green! :)

The Louie Roberts A/E Award is in memory of Louie. I think the organizers are looking for a player who provided ACTION and ENTERTAINMENT a la Louie Roberts. Although I adore Efren Reyes and can't say enough good things about him, he provides a different kind of entertainment.

Not wanting to engage in a debate about the semantics of the word "entertainment," I believe the entertainment provided by Alex Pagulayan and Tony Watson in the previous years is more in line of what they're looking at when considering the prospective candidates. :) :)

The winner is selected by a panel of judges who attended the DCC. Because of the Best Qualified List consisting of so many possible candidates, they delayed the award presentation for a few weeks in order for them to make the best possible selection. There were more than three qualfied candidates, but the three I listed -- Little John, Sparky, and Scott Frost -- were in the lead as of 2 days ago, along with several other noteworthy mentions.

I'm sure the panel of judges are going to discuss the qualified candidates in depth within the next 2 weeks. This award is just one of many perks granted to pool players by the promoters, hoping to make the DCC better each year. This is the third year for the Louie Roberts A/E Award.

As one who is quite familiar with courts, on a professional level (LOL), this poll is only for fun. It's not a court of law, so hearsay is okay. It would be nice to read posts from DCC attendees, as they are the ones who saw how the event unfolded.

I'm not sure why your vote wasn't accepted, stating you had voted previously. That's a new one on me.
