Hey guys...just a quick question for all of you??

Using walnut wood in a cue....Pros or cons?? I have heard that Oily substance in the wood makes the finish break-down over time.......What do you guys think???

Walnut is fine for cues if it's done right. I have used it, and have had no problems. I dont think walnut can be any worse than ebony or cocobolo for taking a finish. Matter of fact, it's better. :)
 
I saw a Capone hoppe once with birdeyes maple forearm/walnut burl points and buttsleeve. It's really beautiful..was sold on ebay by proficient billiards..I'm still wondering who is the lucky fellow who owns it.

walnut might be a "hardwood", but i think it has no MASS, kinda too brittle. so my first impression is that it would suck in any part of the cue. opposite of, say, mahogany, which is too dense and dead.

I've got a batch of "Trapper" style cues in the works, that I build by adding a section to the bottom which moves the points up closer to the joint. In several of these cues I've use some 100 year old walnut given to me by an apprentice of mine who also builds guitars. He was given the wood by a retired woodworker who's been storing it for decades, who got it from his grandfather, who was also an avid woodworker. I generally do not use walnut in the forearm of a cue, but I see no problem if it was cored. This wood was so prized by three generations of woodworkers, that I had to give it a place! Can't send you a pic yet, the cues are "in work", but I'll have several of them at the Derby City Classis with the official "Derby City Classic" logo engraved around the butt, right in the walnut, then cleared over. You can see them at Kevin Whitt's, AKA, "Nineballking's" booth at the Derby!

Sherm, I would love to see these cues. Do you have a location in the Cinti area where I could see them? I used to see you at Beechmont Billiards but I havent been going there lately. The action is kinda dead and I work on Sat. so I don't get a chance to go to the tournament. Engraving DCC on the cue is a pretty good idea. I'm sure they will sell. If I don't hear from you I will check out the cues at th Derby. Are you back from the Phils?
