> Another brand that was well-made in Japan during the late 80's and early 90's is Charvel, particularly the Model 4,5,and 6. The Model 6 was such a nice instrument that it was discontinued eventually by AMIC,the parent company that owned Jackson/Charvel,because it was cutting into the sales of their flagship model, the USA Jackson Soloist. The only real difference was the rosewood fretboard instead of ebony on the USA's,the logo on the headstock, and about 1200 worth of price tag. You could have gotten a Model 6 in 1989 for about 1000 bucks, the tags on MOST USA's was 2200.
Fender now owns Jackson, and while certain things have gotten better, other things have gotten worse. Most notable is a 25% increase in the baseline price for Custom Shop guitars, clogging up the system with this "team built/master built" crap like they do for USA Fenders. They have also had interminable waits for CS guitars, delays on limited editions, and quality control issues, along with reports of horrible customer service and bad relations with dealers.
It almost seems like Fender corporate is trying to kill off the Jackson/Charvel brand, because J/C has always had a particular sector of the market that Fender couldn't touch, not to mention a product that KILLS any Strat ever made, just my opinion. The only Strat I've ever wanted was a Malmsteen model. There isn't a Strat on this planet I think plays or sounds better than my Model 5 though.
Some of the newer Japanese Jacksons like the DKMG,DXMG,and DK2 are really good for the money,a better value than a comparable Fender or Ibanez, and a better playing instrument. Tommy D.
