Was I wrong? (About a tournament)

I find the whole difference-races-for-different sides completely whacked in general. If 2 games is fair to determine who goes to which side of the bracket... why is 1 game fair to determine who has to go home and who keeps shooting?

That being said here's where I think it's weird. The guy before you he had to beat twice. The guy before that he had to beat twice. The guy before that he had to beat twice. But against the most tough opponent, the most important match, he only has to beat you ONCE?

Yeah, the whole thing was a clusterf...
 
It seems to me that coming out of the loser's bracket that you would have to win 2 matches and the other guy in the winner's bracket would only have to win 1 match.

The only question (which you should have asked beforehand) was -- is a match a race to 1 or 2?

Edit: The above being said, without checking I would have assumed that the first match would have been a race to 2. And, in order to win I'd have to win 2 races to 2.

However, I can see how someone could say you would have to beat him a race to 2 (in order to put him in the loser's bracket) and then (since you had both been beaten once) that the final match would be a race to 1.

Either way, you can always wonder what would have happened if you had won the first game and the other guy won the second? Who knows?

Lessson learned, always play dumb and ask the tournament director (TD) beforehand what you have to do to win and what the other guy has to do to win.

I've learned the hard way that whoever is putting on the show gets to make the rules and the TD has the final say (no arguing with them). So, best to pester them with questions beforehand.

You probably are right....but these were their rules. You have to understand that they have some weird rules at places not familar with tournaments. It sounds like you were playing at a place with people not 'in the know' about pool tournaments and the overall pool culture. If you complain too much, they will probably just think you are a baby, although you are right in the eyes of most actual pool players.
 
This happened to me once. The winners side guy shook my hand after winning one game. The tourney director told him the first set was a race to two and we kept playing. I proceeded to win the next three games while my opponent argued with the director without pause.
