The "Template" rack
what are they made out of? wouldn't it effect the balls?
I use it a lot. It's called the Magic Ball Rack and I love it. Perfect rack, every time. EDIT: See next post for a picture.
I'll try to give a decent visual description. It's a thin piece of film-like white paper that is only about 1/2 an inch wide. To rack, you first place the 1/2 inch wide paper rack on the table. There is a diamond shaped hole in the MBR for each ball that is on the perimeter of a 10 ball rack - meaning that interior balls do not to be seeded on the MBR. The little diamond shaped holes in the paper rack allow the balls to roll into and rest perfectly against each other.
Then you break. 90% of the time you simply pick up the MBR after the break.
There are two disadvantages to the MBR over the regular triangle rack.
Maybe after 1 out of 10 breaks, a ball will come to rest on the paper. In which case what we do, is mark the ball that rests on the MBR, remove the ball, remove the MBR and replace the ball. (Perhaps you've seen how a ref marks a ball in a tourney by using their hand in a "V" shape. It's truly not even an issue of saving ball placement integrity)
The MBR is very very thin, however in a very rare circumstance a slow rolling ball that makes contact with the MBR can be slightly affected by it.
People need to weigh these two disadvantages vs an imperfect rack provided by triangle racks and human error. Anyone that's seen the racking fiascos at a tourney like the US Open can make their own judgment call.
We've been using the same MBR at my hall for @ 3 months now, hundreds and hundreds of racks. We can get them locally for $8 retail. The product comes with a 10 ball and a 9 ball rack. They are flimsy. But handled properly, they are durable.
I think they're great for 10 ball. In 9 ball, I think you may find a little less love in only certain matchups. With a perfect rack in 9 ball, any real good player will soon find the sweet spot break for the conditions that day. They will not only make the wing ball, but most often be sitting nicely on the 1.
Donny Mills would have gone 83 for 83 with the MBR vs SVB on TAR 17.
