black is harder

Is it actually harder underneath the black coating? The natural has no coating. When I install the black ones, I sand the bottom using my normal methods, and much of the black is removed. It is not that thick. I only stock 14mm tips. By the time the sides are trimmed and the top is crowned, the black coating is gone. Is what is left harder than the natural? I am not convinced of that, but would like to know what evidence you have.

yeah the coating is there i assume for no purpose other than to distinguish the tips from each other. once you install the coating will be all gone, like a lepro. the black is thinner than the naturals, you can put a pad under there if you want it a little taller. i have both tips, and they are both very hard, but the black is a little harder in general. not a huge difference, but definitely harder. there is also some variance in the tips, so sometime you'll get a slightly softer black and a really hard natural. if you want it to be really hard for a break/jump cue, soak it in mineral spirits (could probably use other liquids too like milke, etc.) and then press the hell out of it for a few days.

FWIW, the natural-colored WB is the standard tip on Andy Gilbert's jump/break cues.

The only box I ever got was from Atlas and it was much softer than the brown. I complained but never heard back.
