We can't have a tournament. Would be fun! Or

When I saw the thread asking 'Who is the best pool player on AZ Billiards', I thought to myself 'I guess we will never know'. We are just to far away from everyone everywhere. I think such a tournament would be a blast.

There is a way we could have a tournament. It just wouldn't really be a pool tournament. Nope, nobody could say this would make them the champ, but I think it could be a lot of fun.

Two years ago my furnace went bad and I was able to tell them to put the new one at a different spot. This allowed me to put a pool table in the basement. Before that the only way I got to play pool at home is on the computer. 'Virtual Pool 3' by Interactive. It is by far the best computer pool game out there, even though it is about 3 or 4 years old now. Can be had now for probably less than 20 dollars. If you've never played this game you shouldn't compare it to the old 2D pool games. It is 3D and looks it. Is it 'playing pool', No. Does it remind you of playing pool, Yes.

Some of the features that I think would be nice for this forum.
1. We could have a tournament.
2. There can be spectators watching a match.
3. There is a chat line at the bottom of the screen. (We could even use this as a chat room by setting up a challenge table. It automatically remembers who is up next. When your up, you shoot, when your not you can talk.) (A challenge table works just like a chalk board in a bar. This differs from a room set up for a match where you just have two players playing and others can watch.)
4. Rooms can be password protected. We could post the password on AZB then we'd know it was just us.

I haven't had this on my computer is over a year and hadn't played it in longer than that. I'm going to load it up this week sometime. I'll follow up on this thread. For one thing, the last time I played it, I wasn't running WinXP. I'll have to check it out. One problem that I can remember is Firewalls. I don't know if they have resolved this in anyway or not. I use to have to set my firewall to minimum protection while I played this online.

If anyone is interested in doing this, give me a reply here. I could use my web site to organize things (have a lot of room available).

When I was playing this online, I had a LOT of fun. The chatting during the matches was always just as much fun as the playing. Harassing about missed shots, discussing what should have been played etc, etc.

Heck of an idea JR! I’ve never played virtual pool but my mouse finger is always in stroke. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Hey Bob J., are they still running Internet Equal Offense ?

A simulation tournament is just that, a simulation. It would only show who is the best simulator player on that day, and not reflect on the underlying game whatsoever. I used to play PGA Tour golf on Macs and PCs a long time ago, and had many rounds in the 50s ! I rarely break 80 on the course.

BUT ... there used to be on-line tournaments using a game that I believe was called "Internet Equal Offense". I recall that Bob Jewett used to play ... are they still being held ? The game was played by teams, at a hall or home with Internet connectivity, and scores were reported to some higher authority in 'real time'. Seemed like a good idea, assuming that folks out there are not playing with their scores.

Yup, that is exactly what I said in the original post. From original post, "It just wouldn't really be a pool tournament. Nope, nobody could say this would make them the champ, but I think it could be a lot of fun."

While your idea is good, I'm not certain that it would be a true measure of who the best player is. Some people may play real pool better than they play a video game, while others may play video games better.

The CCB has a tourney for poster every year at the US Open. Maybe something like that can be done here, maybe at Valley Forge?

This is what I was talking about, I could kick Keiths butt in some 9ball, win some Vcash. Talk some stuff, sounds fun.

Oh well, Virtual Pool 3 still requires you to turn your firewall off and I won't do that. So this isn't going to happen with me anyway. I think it could have been fun.

If you've never seen the game, I'll tell you a little about it. In particular the bad. A couple people have replied that it would not show who was the best at pool. Well, again, that is what I said in the first post of the thread. Now I'll tell you why.

Virtual Pool 3 has two shortcomings. And only two, but that is all it needs to make it unrealistic. Especially when the first one is an automatic perfect stroke. Since a good straight stoke is one of the most individual and difficult parts of the game, realism goes out the window. You look at a 3D picture from the shooters point of view right above the cue stick. You have to aim the cue ball. You have to decide what spin you want. But when it is time to hit the ball, you roll your mouse back and forth and the game automatically moves the cue stick in a perfectly straight back and straight forward stroke. If you aimed it correctly the ball is going in, as opposed to real life where just because you aimed it correctly, that doesn't mean that the cue ball is going to go where you aimed it.

The second problem with VP3 is not so apparent. The problem - no give in the cushions. You can bank balls that look like the cue would double kiss by using english and speed. The english makes it come off at the correct angle, the force of the speed makes the cushion give enough to let the cue ball get out of the way without double hitting the object ball. VP3 doesn't simulate this because there was no give in the cushions. It would double kiss every time and kick the ball off line. You know the shot I'm talking about, but hear is an example. You can't make this shot in VP3, I would imagine most of us hear can on a real table.

Other than those two issues Virtual Pool 3 is very realistic. When you playing a cut shot, it looks just like it does in real pool. When I didn't have a table at home, I had a lot of fun playing this game.

Thanks JR. Even if it won’t work this time, maybe something in the future could work out.

Good idea !
