Weed Out Time

I really think it's time for the AZ staff to weed out some of these pests and trouble makers that are coming on here lately. There are a lot of good posters that haven't posted in awhile or post very little now. I know where the ignore button is but when your losing good posters...that don't help. Not that I'm a good poster but I'm thinking of taking a vacation from AZ too. Johnnyt

Johnny,

On the opposite end of the contribution spectrum, I'm a new member and I rarely post as I'm mainly here to learn what there is to learn here.

I agree that it is very discouraging, and makes it much harder to stay motivated to find helpful information here.

I see no real downside to an increase in moderation force. All of the posters who make contributions here have nothing to worry about with their posts. Only the trolls will complain...

Police have a hard time cleaning up a neighborhood that condones crime. Moderators will be needed less if we refuse to participate in bad threads. The really abusiveposters are weeded out pretty quickly here.

Tap! Tap! There are enough good posts and people here that the crap will quickly fade away if nobody bumps it up with a reply.

Why do you think I don't come on here as much as I used too?Or why linda, sweet marrissa,Thorsten,Monica Webb,Charlie, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on.
I've only been on here for over a year, but at first I was amazed at the topics and people on here.I was addicted! Now,could'nt be bothered to read garbage posts.Sorry,it gets old after awhile.Oh well.I'm going to Mexico tomorrow to lie on the beach and drink my face off,so you all take care.:p ;)
Too bad I'm going to miss the reports for the W.P.C.,but hope all my favorites do well......Go Efren,Thorsten,John,Edwin,Shane,Tyler Edey.
See ya.:D

This is one of those "easy to say, difficult to do" things. First off, what defines a "pest" and "trouble maker" ? These are the folks that you want others to "weed out", so they must be identifiable (I don't want to be weeded out, and I certainly can be a smart-ass trouble maker). Second, once you identify a "pest" and deal with it, then the game becomes that of identity-changes. The ability to authenticate a specific human being over the Internet is non-trivial, and the overhead to any such system will drive users away from the site, imo. Third, the amount of effort to perform this "weed out" will be significant overhead to the "AZ staff" (OK, Mike), and they must balance that effort with the benefit to AZ .... which will likely end up as a "too much effort for too little return" scenario, again imo.

In my opinion the best way to handle this is to do so individually. Do not read the pests. Do not reply to the pests. Do not complain about the pests. With no attention they will move on. It's only a fun game when you get a reaction.

Don't you think that if everyone posted who they are (full name), they might begin to take a bit more responsibility for what they say?

I know it's a "privacy" issue. I think a lot of the mean spiritedness would go away if we knew who everyone is.

Just my opinion.

I have no intention of flaming anybody, but I think the situation with people creating new threads daily about how to clean up the AZ is actually worse than what anybody is currently doing.

You want to chase people out of here like a bouncer after last call is over, I've seen MBs (yes, I post on other MBs) where Mods go haywire, deleting threads, banning posters, all in an attempt to "clean things up". It doesn't work. It just winds up pissing everybody off.

I'm very sorry, but if you don't like what goes on around here, don't come around here. Nobody is making you log on.

Again, I'm just trying to get my point across, not ruffle any feathers.

I agree. I think too many are too quick to cry about stuff. It's actually amusing watching someone come along and knock some of them off of their pretentious pedistools...

And I avoid forums with a lot of moderation like the plague...they are no fun what so ever.

Apparently, despite what anyone says, you intend pound your position into everyone's head.

It isn't ONLY a privacy issue, it's a safety issue as well. There is ALOT of information available on the internet and there are ALOT of total whackos out there in this big wide world.

That you haven't encountered any nutcases in your time online is commendable. There are others that HAVE encountered them. Some online participants are prone to threatening you AND your families (and pets). They will threaten to damage your car, boat, motor home, etc.
They threaten to burn your home down, shoot you from a distance with a scoped rifle. They threaten to write or call YOUR job and your SPOUSE'S job and try to have you fired.

They have offered other's that know your name and/or address, money for the information. Once they have your information, they will post ALL your information online, make up lies about you and hound you from forum to forum. They will call you on the phone at ALL hours, day & night. Harrass your wife, husband or children and try to ruin your credit.

I have encountered at least three individuals like this in past 10 years online and many others here have encountered them also. Some have faced their wrath and some have been spectators.

I've used Smorgass Bored as my online handle for over 10 years. I don't use or have any other identities. I sign my posts Doug, with no last name. I've met 100s of people in person that I've met online. I've played pool with at least 50 AZB members. I was tournament director at Planet 9-Ball in Tampa for eight years and could be found or called there.

There are a huge number of online people that know who I am and know my last name. They keep my last name to themselves at my request and surprisingly, they have managed to do so for 10 YEARS. I've lived at my current address for over 20 years and I've been listed in the phonebook for the same length of time.

I CHOOSE not to sign my last name to my posts. I appreciate and thank my friends that have honored my request for Privacy and quite frankly, I'm getting tired of you and some others that repeatedly insist for full disclosure from everyone, just because YOU use YOUR name online.

Freedom of Speach

I think people need to stop the crying about other posters ruining the board. This is the internet and is meant to be accessable by all. I even crack a few laughs reading some of the nonsense on here. I have been here for a few years, and mostly am just a lurker. I love this site and have gained so much pool knowledge in the few years I've been here. I can honestly say though that people complaining about posters is worse than the childish postings. I have the choice to read the threads I wish to, as do all the other members. I think people should just give the " ban this guy and that guy" a rest. These people remind of the people who always complain about a non perfect rack. Just shut up and break the balls.

I agree

I totally agree with this view. I don't say anything here that I wouldn't say to someone if I were face to face with them.

Well, whenever I am at a tourney and there are othere AZers there, I make it a point to introduce myself to them. I dont feel that I should "have to" post my name on here b/c of exaclty what Smorgessboard was saying. It doesnt have to be someone you are talking to, just someone that sees your name and wants to cause trouble. Atleast on here, I can get a good feel of the persons character before I decide to introduce myself to them. JMO.

Sorry, Doug, I didn't thing I was pounding into anyone's head. I was offering a suggestion only. You obviously don't agree. I respect that.
Sorry if I upset you.

I can also see why so many pros don't post here.

I own a successful pool room and am not dependant on the posters here to frequent my place. If I was, I may be more obsequious with what I post, or not post at all.

But, you know, luckily we're in a free society, and how does anyone change something? By expressing their views on things they feel strongly about.

And I'm as entitled as you are to express them.

Regards, Danny

Well, good for you. I too, think that you shouldn't say things that you wouldn't say face to face, BUT..... I suspect that it wouldn't take long for one of you holier-than-thou posters to change your tune if you ever became a target of one of the online whackos. That cavalier attitude begins to wane when threats include your wife, children, grandchildren, parents and home.... imo
