Fantastic Turnout!!! Had 13 entrants, and ABZ's own InsideEnglish came out and took 3rd Place. Super Nice Guy didn't have a chance to hit any with him, I stayed busy running the Tourney, but from the way it all went I think I'll have more than enough chances to play him again.

Thanks, to all who showed up and see you next week.

Thanks for the kind words!

I really like this room. Everybody was very friendly and it was a great atmosphere for a weekly event. Races to 3/2 are very tough to dominate...anything can and does happen!

Send me the flyer ASAP and I will spread the word. Soon you will be turning people away...:)

And please don't tell people I am a nice guy, don't want to sully my already-tarnished reputation...:)

$20 entry to win $60 for third place sounds like a great night for the bar owner, not so much for the guy who won seven matches to make $40. (minus quarters and Calcutta, if there is one)

I'd rather work at McD's, it pays better.

Anyone entering a $20 entry-fee weekly event hoping to walk away with a sizeable about of cash is playing for the wrong reasons, in my opinion.

As far as I see it, playing in these types of events are purely for practice and fun, not to make any serious money.

There is no calcutta, and there are no quarters. These are 9' Hollywood tables.

If you were to examine the flyer closely you would see that if 16 players enter the owner kicks in $50 to make the total prize fund $370.

Further examination of the top three payouts would indicate that not only is the owner not charging green fees, but the tournament director gets nothing from the prize fund...AND all the money is being paid out!

If it seems like I am jumping in your shit a little bit it's because I am tired of people putting down any and everything anyone tries to do!

This is a friendly little place, nice people, great atmosphere and food, and they want to have a little weekly event giving back ALL the money to the players. It is just friendly $20 competition.

Anyway, don't play if it is not worth your while, have fun at McDonalds.

If you do decide to come out to this event, be prepared to have fun, if that is OK with you.

Hey my hat's off to you sir, I saw this and didn't want to add fuel to the fire. So I'm happy that someone else saw the craziness in that guy's thinking. From all the responses I've gotten this week may exceed the 16. So we'll have to put everything to the test and see just how many people we can handle. More money in the Fund, if that actually happens I'd like to add a couple more places paid without affecting the original payout amounts. We shall see.

In my experience, players who enter tournaments "for fun" usually don't win.

It's nice to hear that all the money is being paid back to the players, but I think the owners could kick in more than $50 in exchange for having all those warm bodies in their room that might not otherwise be there.

I obviously didn't get into pool expecting to get rich, but given the thousands that I've spent in table time, not to mention the cost of converting my garage to a pool room, it's nice to recoup a little of my losses when I catch a gear and play great.

I took 3rd place in a tournament last night, $10 entry with calcutta and coin-op tables. I think there were 26 players. I made about $130 after expenses.

It's not life changing money, but it's nice to get something tangible in recognition of the effort it takes to play well enough to cash.

Anyway, keep playing for fun. I'll be the guy sending you home. :D

Sorry you think of converting your garage to a pool room as a loss.

And we can both agree that room owners don't owe us anything outside of a decent room with good food and drink. Tournaments are a bonus for us, especially the smaller ones. I do recognize some rooms make extra dough with bigger events, but those are rare.

As far as spending thousands on pool time, that was your choice, and you did enjoy yourself?

I know a guy who lives, eats and breathes motorcycles. He spends beaucoup bucks on his racing bike and gear, and never competes...he just rides for fun. I have never heard him complain about there not being enough high-paying tournaments so he can recoup his "losses" for the money he chose to spend enjoying his hobby.

Anyway, you get my point...hopefully.

And...(I could not let this slide)...come by sometime...I don't think you would have an easy time sendng me home, unless you're a world-beater. I am not a big gambler nor a champion, but I am no slouch either. If you're not from MD then maybe we can connect at Valley Forge, provided I don't have to work.

No hard feelings...let's just agree to disagree about the smaller events.

No hard feelings is OK with me, you're one of the posters that I like.

Just had to yank your chain a little in response to the snarky comment about "having fun, if that's ok with you".

:D

I am the King of Snark...:)

Take it easy...and keep hammering away at the $10 events, it would take you twice as long as my $20 ones...LOL

I may have to come check this out since I'm over in Laurel now.

Black Cat: About what time are y'all finishing up? Pretty important for an old guy that has to be up at 4 am? lol. Hollywood tables huh? Played on a few from time to time. They don't play bad if they're set up right. How many tables?

420trooper: Fellow Oklahoman here. Give the state a big ol' hug from me. I really miss it.

Black Cat has not answered so I'll take the liberty of answering for him.

The room has six tables, but the owner only lets him use four of them so he can rent the other two. This is OK because the first event only had 13 players. It started late (8:00 PM) because some of the locals were not used to tournaments and had a lot of questions. They were done around midnight.

The second week had 8 players, and two of the locals backed out because they "didn't like their chances". Event was cancelled as a result.

The third week had 8 players again and the same two locals backed out for the same reason. Event was cancelled as a result.

I did not play last night because I was not optimistic.

Black Cat (Kevin Williams) is planning on making some adjustments to appease the regulars:

Lower entry fee ($15)
APA-styled rules and handicapping

I think once the regs feel more comfortable about their chances the event will grow.

Right now, Kevin is the only one doing anything to promote this event (web, email, texts) so he needs time to get it in people's heads that this event exists.

Anyway, there you have it.

Hey everyone thanks for the support and your patience. As Inside English has stated although we got off to a great start the first week the SPEED THAT HE AND A COUPLE OF OTHERS brought to the event shook a few people. So as a result we've had a couple of rough weeks.

The Prize Fund is dropping to $290.00, paying out 100% 1st place 122, 2nd $48, 3rd $24 & 4th thru 9th $16.

Rules: Rack your own, Table open after the break, BIH, Call Pocket no Slop. Jump Cues and Masse' Shots Allowed.

Modified Single Elimination: Guaranteed to play twice... Not lose twice!!!

Will use APA Handicap System for Match Race determination... Everyone will play 1 Handicap level below their "CURRENT OFFICIAL APA RATING". If they don't have one the Tournament Director will assign a handicap.

These changes have addressed all the concerns of the locals that can be addressed, if this dosen't fly then it just wasn't ment to be.

Thanks Again, for all the support so far.

Thank you Inside English and Black Cat for clarifications. I still have a few weeks of TAP league left in Annandale. The team I'm on will be doing playoffs.

After that, my schedule should clear me up on Monday nights so I can come check it out.

I'm trying to recruit a buddy of mine who is also a forum member to check it out as well. I'll let him know of the changes.

Black Cat: please accept my humble apologies if I offended you with my reply to your e-mail. I wasn't trying to cause harm but was trying to inject a little humor in one of the areas I had questions about.

Also; can you tell me what time that place opens?

Thanks.

You didn't offend me at all, the only person that got under my skin abit was the person knocking the event. And, I did omit the changed time as well. Registation starts at 6:45pm Tournament will start at 7:30pm, the Draw will be at 7:15pm.

Also, there will be 3 chances at a Super Break Rack, will raffle tickets for $1 dollar per chance, pot will grow each week till someone either Break N Runs either a rack of 8ball or 9ball, or makes the 8 or 9 on the break.

Any other questions please feel free to let me know.
