Bob Farr has a beautiful desert ironwood cue for sale just now - only problem is that it's an ounce too heavy for me and is already a little forward balanced (per Bob). The joint on the cue is a full sized stainless steel piloted 5/16x14. I am wondering how much weight could be saved by using an ivory (or synthetic) over stainless joint. I like the hit of stainless joints and would like to retain that while reducing weight. The question is how much weight savings and what would something like that cost??

Bob states in the thread that if you changed the SS to an ivory joint you would save approx. 1 ounce. One would only assume if you just "sleeved" the joint and not replace it entirely, the weight would be even less than 1 ounce.
 
Understood, but there are cue makers here that use both joint types and could tell me not only the weight savings but what it would cost to have it done. Bob is probably making an educated guess.
 
When one of my cues that I had made for me came out a little heavier than I ordered the cuemaker said he could remove the steel joint pin and install a titainium one.I dont remember how much weight was removed

Pulling a 5/16" 14 SS pin and replacing it with titanium will save .3 oz

That helps, thanks Larry. I wonder if there are titanium sleeves as well - a whole titanium joint??
 
Not sure about other pins but the difference between stainless and titanium Radial pins is 1.38 oz versus .79 oz so you pick up over a half an ounce.

If you sleeved the joint you could probably get close to the same.

Personally, I'll take a weight forward cue even if it is a little heavier than my ideal.
