hi, so I went south in China down to Zhejiang
where I shot with an Indian guy and a Canadian guy and
then one time, the local guy at the pool hall.
The pool hall was down the road past kfc and
the canal bridge past the taiwanese fast food place.
Stop in to buy a beer and play.
Budget though so one time I just went to hang out.
'No money, no honey' as the Canuck had on his tshirt so the guy who works there;
he's a cripple in his legs but his upper body is really strong.
He just limps and rides a motorbike says he was 'wu liao' meaning bored so he asked me to play.
Not many foreigners in pool halls.
Everyone is in beijing or shanghai.
So he played well, beat me.
I went down lane to play one arvo with Prasad.
He's from near Bombay aka Mumbai.
Funny, he hadn't played, was a natural and won one game against me.
I played him over green cold bottles of beer
then played the manager and got him.
Always somebodies gather watching.
Then to Shandong at this huge school where
I teach english and play basketball, swim and soccer.
I went out tonight with a german guy and a nz guy to shoot pool.
We missed the bus so we taxied.
We get beers.
I end up playing the local gun who beats me fourteen to eight eightball.
I don't care anymore about playing percentages.
(well, sometimes I do when I'm five balls down but then I go for it too).
I don't know if to play easy shots or more difficult shots for position.
I can beat all the internationals I've played in China
but with Chinese guys its fifty fifty and
always end up with playing their best.
Altrhough I played safeties, they were off,
so offensive was my main style.
Its call pocket. Slop gets respotted on the bottom rail.
We had barbeque afterwards with grilled squid and chicken heads,
egg and rice and cockles; a shell seafood and other stuff.
The restaurant next door. Outside alfresco style.
I can't read chinese so I ordered by price on the menu.
We taxied back.
I'm thinking of going into weihai city to play.
Could be interesting.
Chinese pool playing is ok.
They have players.
More than bangers.
The pool places are open late as are the body massuers.
And restaurants ala barbequed seafood and
stuff and cold beer or spirits and coke..

That was one of the more interesting posts I've read recently.

I used to enjoy going in All-Japanese restaurants when I was there. The challenge for me was to look around the restaurant and pick out something that looked good at another table and sheepishly smile and either eye the plate or discretely point at the plate with an ignorant smile on my face. They always smiled and knew what I wanted. When it came tiime to pay I always made sure that I didn't have very much money to show them and would just let them pick what portion of the money they needed. It seemed that the Japanese are just like any other race of people. Treat them right and they'll treat you right.

I'm quite sure after all the pool you'll be after the massuers. But hopefully you got the place right. It's weihai yes? Weihai is in jiangsu. The other one is beihai and that's in guangxi.

well Renegade it wasn't that greatest I got this large plate of seashells that are said to be cockles and um something grilled. Just twenty six bucks (rmb)anyway. I thought the nz guy and German bloke wanted some but they didn't, just the weihaiwei beer. They left earlier as I was playing chinese at pool. Funny when I paid the bill I paid for them cause thats the style here. All out, one pays.

Its raining all day and as I need my exrecise I'm picking up my cue, walking out in the rain with my new umbrella (summer rains) and a few k before I can get a cab to go back and shoot the chinese.
Last night was rained out. Outdoor pool under a tin roof overhead outside the shop. Water on cloth and chalk sliding off damp cueball. Great. Had to hit near centre directly or it'll just slidesideways anywheres.
Playing the young gun again night before the washout and did better.
Theres two venues I play at here.
Find my way to indoor pool tonight.
Don't expect to see any laowei (westerners)
later

Ok, I misread you heading south that's Jiangsu, southern Shandong. Weihai city (formerly known as weihaiwei) sits east of Shandong Peninsula, a coastal province. And famous for its fine QingDao beer (should be the weihaiwei beer if I'm not wrong).

I thought Alex P is dual citizenship, is he? Well, can't call it clown. There're many different nationalities representing different countries in many different sports all over the world.

Keep your posts coming. I equate your posts in China to the mountain men in America in the 1800's whose adventures took them to new and exciting frontiers. Good luck.

theres no gamble here. Like I carry five hundred but no-one says a word to me then they beat met twenty to ten. Just their best. The others I can handle. I'm fifty plus, started playing ten years ago.
Its like if you're you're going to knock a few balls around, drink beer with other internationals (germans, canadians, americans, kiwis) for a night out, you can do that but when they (the chinese) pick up on you as a pool animal, they want to play you and not your banger friends and you realize you're in place where they hang every night of the week and all know each other. And thats what they do, play pool. That defines them. Its their domain and the girlfriends wait.
And so courteous. Offering to retip my cue and gave me two tips when they saw my flat tip was mushrooming out but I sand papered it dome shape so its better than one flat pancake. Then it just stuns but doesn't spin.
JoeyA : twenty six rmb, american dollars three. I paid twenty chinese bucks tonight. Played to midnight from eight. So theres your four hour session for two dollars fifty americano. The stroke of twelve. Went to the restaurant next door for barbeque and green bottle of cold beer. They know me as its next door and the owner shot pool with me earlier.
Bizarre rules though. Respot random pots on the bottom rail. Call shot only. Then this guy pots the black when I'm on it and he has one ball on the table and the ball gets respotted on the end rail and he has a penalty ball in hand to respot later.
No westerners. My Raebok were wet from catching a puddle on the walk up the open road before I hailed a three wheeler so I played barefoot. No problems. Three bucks(rmb) got me there after a four k walk in the rain.
I left this country town (after midnight) walking with one for the road (Laoshan Beer) right down the middle of the road. The first cabbie wouldn't look at me. Drove by then the next taxi picked me up and back in school again.
And that taxi guy had the most wicked laugh. In a good way.
I think cause I was playing with bangers a lot (up north) I started playing quick and I still do but then you meet a player who gets his shots ninety percent of the time and you can't recover. No second chance.
Its not dangerous here, just welcoming and I'm a novelty species, the western pool player.
Its good. In a packed pool hall, getting on a table with the best player in five minutes.
Its getting harder to define nationality stereotypes anymore in the west as we are cosmopolitan. Chinese can become australian but australians can never become chinese. So how can you have a recognised filipino playing abroad..? Its like admitting national defeat. Hey they are better than us. I don't want to go there. Country of birth. Thats it, JoeyA. Play for it. Represent it and the same with coaches. Anything else is too instant. imo. Any sport.
I think it comes down to where you bros are. But then what do I know.
Just that I'm a pool animal and pool animals recognise each other everywhere irrespective of skin color or cultural identity.
