Laurie Franklin definitely said there is a specific way. I want to say with. It's been almost 10 years since they did work on some shafts I had so don't hold me to it. She said most micarta ferrule blanks you find are cut the wrong way because cutting it the right way yields less blanks so people cut them the wrong way to get the most out if the material.

Tubular is the best, though, but more and more difficult to find.
Thought i had a line on some 1/2" rolled paper last week from a machinist buddy, but he said he sold it all. Probably some damn cuemakers heard about it. :wink:
