So last night during a league match, I think I had my first cheese-ride shutout. By that, I mean my opponent won by getting the combination-nine in every game they won. I was amazed. First game, they broke, lined up the one-nine, score. Second game, they made two balls, lined up a carom off the four into a 6-9 combo. Third game, I attempted a safe and left the cue behind the one on a rail. They shot it all the way down table, cross corner into the nine and in. Third game, after a few cheese attempts, I ran out. Starting to get back in stroke. Last game, I broke and the cue scratched (I think something kicked it in the side). They lined up the one into the nine into the far rail with no open pocket in sight, fired the one into the nine, banked downtable missing everything in sight, nine hit the four ball in and followed it in for the win.....unbelievable. Now, I did have a couple chances to turn things around but either didn't execute, got hooked or scratched. There were so few shots in the match though, that it was tough to even get going.

Afterwards, I thought about it and this was really good strategy on my opponent's part. In position play, safety and full out running, I generally would not have trouble with this person and they knew it. So, feeling as if they had no chance, they fired at the nine nearly everytime, to 4 wins. Maybe this has happened to you or you have done this to someone else. It was a first to me. No hard feelings, just very surprised at how well it worked. Just goes to show that sometimes a little luck or some good rolls can go a long ways......

A "cheese ride" match? Your opponent wasn't this guy, was he?

Yep, sure can work and like a dream if all the stars are in alignment. I don't recommend it all the time but the game is nine ball where the only thing that really counts toward a win is making a legal shot and dropping the nine.

I participated in a handicapped 9 ball tournament with call 9 rules at Classic Cue in Depew, NY when I first started playing and took 3rd place in a full field doing that to every opponent. My friends there kept laughing and couldn't believe what I was doing. It was my second tournament and even crazier since the week before I went 2 and out very quickly.

Once I got more experienced I understood how much it must have annoyed people then to have their opponent constantly hunt the cheese but I was so new to the game that when the rules were explained to me I didn't completely get the whole concept of the game.

I viewed 9 ball as a creative game of ball paths and connections kind of like 3 rail billiards so if there was any chance in hell that you might have the cue ball or object ball heading to the 9 to pocket it you could should call it. So with that said I called the 9 and the destination pocket on a lot of shots and for a high percentage that day they went in. If I based my AZ name on that day I would have been known as HighPercentageCheeseRider or lowPercentageShotTaker or even better the CheeseN8r...lol

I was having so much fun being aggressive and creative with my 9 ball caroms, combos, combo banks, kicks, kisses, draw and follow shots from ball to ball that I didn't even think safety or run out. I just shot balls in until I got a shot at the 9 in some legal way. I might have had 2 five or more ball runs that tournament and I pulled 3rd place.

Sounds like you played an undercover Filipino :). When Santos (Sunny at the time) 1st came to the bay area, CA in the 90's, this was how a friend of mine described how lucky he got when they played. :thumbup:
