I know 2 guys that take a section out of their PureX J/B and break with it. Both do well with it and said they like it. I haven't tried it myself.
My good friend uses a short break cue... its a house cue that has been altered by about 3 or 4 inches... he scoop strokes it into the cue ball . palm cupping the butt of the cue and he gets good action on it. He says he likes it better because it doesn't fatigue his shoulder. He is an elder billiard statesman.

One of the last cues I made was a shorter break cue. It's 55" long. Also has a very thick joint. Around .880". It breaks really well. I've never been able to get away from it.
Mezz Powerbreak 2 is 54" and crushes the rack. If not for one getting stolen from my friend, I would be the proud owner of it. I have also taken the middle handle section out my Pure X and it breaks well like that also. Not as well as the Mezz, but it will get the job done. Just my two cents.
My Jacoby jump cue is short, I dont break worth a damn with it though, I would say probably not much better than when using my playing cue.

About a dozen years ago, I tried a 54-inch cue for breaking that was a wall cue where I played. I like it and when a guy who owed me money gave me a Players J/B cue, I took 4 inches off the butt end, and used it for a few years. Loaned it to a friend and never got it back
But then I picked up an old Schon cue that had been broken and was shortened by four inches. I put an off-brand break shaft, added a White Diamond tip, and it became my favorite breaker.

Hi Duane, one time at EXPO, the Mezz Co let us use a shorter Break Cue, in our booth. I have to say that I liked it & several others did too.
Maybe, just maybe, the less weight behind the grip hand, to pull you off line, the better. I did enjoy it, but I was already dialed in with my Auerbach Break Cue, or I would have purchased one on the spot..

funny how you see lots of 54/55" answers......remember the little shorty i built that had the pink ivory joint at Joels? it was 54.75"
when i built mine i kept all the numbers the same......it was around 18oz and the balance was shorter than 18.5 but it was moved back in exact relation to the cue lenght....just figured it with some cross multiplying.....i remember i had a rounded off delrin buttcap on it, loved the dam thing because i held it like i did my baseball bat, with my pinkie lagging over on end....was very comfy......some rat pos stole it here in louisiana many years ago.
54/55" is usually at the end of the bottom of wrap of a typical cue.....where a good number of people hold their hand.
its very easy to control.....that cue was actually super deuper on the bar box....
i loved breaking with it, and i could control it much better on jumps and masse's imop.
