What are the differences between TAP & APA leagues

Murphy's Law won neither. They won the 2nd board which is 1/2 the money at the Rally then the Elite board. That team is a built team for the Rally like all the other teams there. They never won the Morgan Cup...Better check your notes Poolguy4U

Well...if you page down far enough as you well know...it's sure looks like the same faces.

Same faces, trophy and a pile of money.:D

Morgan Cup Champs.....A & B Club won over Mullys 3-1

At Edison, I was watching them play until about 3AM in the morning. Kind of looked like the handicap 6 player played better than the 7. I think it's great that they play good. I root for all the teams...even the team from Georgia with the young boy who is a handicap 4 and still was able to break and run.

TAP title holders and dream team events are the bomb....
You have to be real good and have some luck too.
I'd like to see more teams in TAP League.

Same guys----------->

Yes kevin we have shitty apa operators lol that is the real problem.

I'm Bruce.

Fron what ive read and heard, there are shitty operators in every league. The key is to avoid them, and play in whatever league near you that is run well. And that you enjoy playing in.

Despite what the cool kids say.

This guy from everyone I talk to... knows how to run a league.. I'd love to get him in York

:canoodle:

Yeah...get a few teams out of Finley's. Just don't pick DeeDee's or Ken's pool league nights. Dee Dee will get fired up quick!:lmao:

Would love to see TAP League shooting at Finley's. Seems like Cobblestones is dedicated to APA.

Well that can be done when you have multiple bca leagues in a town ..you play another night. But here if you want to play handicap league your only option is apa right now. We have operators that treat people like they need them not the only way around. as I said in another post these people wouldn't find this acceptable in any other business but a pool league they take it.

I'm trying man..They want to put a 9 ball league in in may. I just need 4 teams to get the ball rolling but every apa team that says they are interested back out after they get the phone call. lol

btw Ken is no longer operating a league..he's retired lol And I play in dee dee acs league (going to vegas in may) and she seems to run a good league. Treats the players well..I give acs and bca league operators a lot of credit around here. they make $0 dollars for doing it. They put every penny back in the league . They do it for the love of the game.

Pool4U GUY.....If you look ...yes...many are the same faces from the Morgan Cup winners (A& B Club which were first time winner of the Cup) but its not the same team...and....Murphy s Law was in the 2nd chance event (championship board)...not the main Elite board meaning at least 64 other teams of the 164 entered finished ahead of them in the round robin format to make the Elite board. Huge difference! Your trying to spin something that isn't there. Good team? Yes. Elite board team? Not this year.

How you figure I'm trying to spin something? You post pictures and money in one picture, then the same shooters win at the Dream Team event.

Again...pictures were posted on a public site. They won money at both events.

Same shooters played and won. You can change the team name but not the faces.

Same faces, same people won events.

The championship board and the Elite board...really isn't much difference. The payout is different...yes, but to win either one, you got to be good.

TAP runs two National Events a year where players and teams can buy in. The awesome thing about TAP events is there is a first day of round robin to select the top 64 for the elite board. Many of these teams have experience in twice yearly team competition. and the remaining teams fill the Championship and Best of the Rest board that play out over the subsequent days

TAP Nationals move around the country and run round robin and then single elimination boards, giving teams 18 individual matches of play Guaranteed. This gives teams a chance to shake off the first match jitters and shine.

APA runs a modified single format at their one team national event in August in Vegas. This means your team is only guaranteed 6 individual matches of play and can get bounced in just 2 rounds.

If you spend all year getting to the big show?....you will want more than 2 rounds & 6 individual matches to show what you are made of. Especially when both leagues are similar in cost.

Winning a local Titleholder with fewer teams is one thing. It is a lot easier then winning a board at a Rally event. Many of the same faces? Yes. Same team? No. Three different players can change the make ip of a team entirely. I am sure you know that. If you don't than you shouldn't be in this conversation. Elite board is a helluva lot different then the championship board. I am not sure where they were seeded but I do know at least 64 other teams did better than this team in the round robin and that is why they were on the 2nd chance board. To win this board I do agree, you have to be good but to win the Elite board is saying something totally different. They are not the same.

PS...Laurel Highlands TAP has on average of 1 in 8 teams at the Rally. This area has always supported TAP's Rally in a big way and usually has the most teams there or at least has the top 3 team counts at the Rally. The laws of average say LH TAP teams will be in the money somewhere. And no 8 ball players from any of the LH TAP teams were dqed. We had one 9 ball player dqed. That's not bad out of approx. 150-200 LH TAP players attending. And from what I heard maybe 5 dqs out of approx. 1,500 or more players. That's about a 99.5% success rate. TAP handicaps and Poolnet works.

Anyways this is a post asking the difference between TAP and the APA, not about individual teams so.........In the words of the late Loyd Schonter TAP Founder....TAP ON!

You run a great league and hope more people can see that. Love the idea of the turnpike tournament. More opportunity for players to meet and be competitive.

And with the round robin...it's the luck of the draw. You can have four of the best teams in your group, but not everyone will move on to the Elite board. This is why teams in the Championship board are just as good as the Elite.

Just look how Jersey 45 did. It was their turn this year but will be different next year. Just great competition throughout.

Short answer: Join TAP.

Longer answer:

In addition to the previously mentioned score keeping difference, where every ball and every shot are accounted for in TAP scoring, the main differences are these:

TAP is call shot while APA is slop.
TAP does not prohibit the use of a jump cue, nor any other cue which meets the World Standardized Rules as far as I'm aware.
TAP team handicap limit is 25 versus the "23-Rule" in APA.
TAP handicaps are also 2-7, but tend to run 1/2 to 1 lower than an APA handicap allowing the play of a much stronger 5 person line up.
TAP has an annual National Championship which takes place in a different city every year similar to the APA National Team Championships held annually in Las Vegas. However, if you do not qualify, you can assemble a Dream Team roster and attend to play in the Dream Team event. There is also a Dream Team event (8 ball and 9 ball) at the Super Billiards Expo every year. This is to say that twice a year you're eligible to attend a National level event in TAP. Singles competition in each handicap bracket is held as well.

You'll be frustrated with sandbaggers in either league, as you likely will in any handicapped format.
The only downside to TAP imho is the tedious nature of the score keeping.

That probably covers most of it, if I think of anything else, and no one covers it, I'll reply again later.

What he said....

To add though, if your a higher handicap player, you'll most likely be more frustrated watching APA players as a whole, as opposed to TAP players. At least that's the way it is around here. Much higher skill leveled players in TAP from top to bottom...

Laurel Highlands in Southwestern PA?

Lh tap

Yes....I live near the 9/11 crash site at Shanksville. LH TAP is in Bedford, Cambria, Somerset,Westmoreland counties and the Frostburg, Md. area.

I am interested in TAP at Finley's. What night of the week?

Now that summer is right around the corner, it may have to wait till September.

Does APA have a Masters league in the area?

They tried but no one showed up. Tap was looking at a Monday night league

Completely agree with all of the above. I will add that I have played in both on multiple occasions and another nice side effect of the higher level of play in TAP is that in my experience it didn't take as long to finish up the average league night, so I could get home earlier on average. Some of that was higher level of play and some was that the TAP players were more attentive to the pool instead of smoking, drinking, and socializing. In addition, the APA players seemed to spend more time just staring at the table when they're supposed to be playing (can't figure out what to do next? shark moves? who knows) and doing long time out discussions.

No TAP?

If there is no TAP in your area at this point?.. you can build your own league using the app. 9 & 10 Ball will be released this month and then android.http://www.runoutapps.com
The app makes it easy for anyone to start and build a league in their local area..anywhwere. No more paper, printers, in or gas burned running score sheets for licensees. It make building in house or traveling leagues simple. If you don't have TAP in your area?, reach out to SAM at TAP and he'll show you how its done.

TAP is a call pocket league for 8-ball, in APA, slop counts.
TAP 9-ball is call the 9-ball and other than that twist of added skill, it is played like true 9-ball. Players race to their handicap. APA players get points for balls, so you can actually win more games and lose the match.
TAP teams win by match points. The team with the most match points wins. APA has a new point scoring system that allows the lesser teams to win. It gives points to teams that lose a match.
TAP Nationals travel to new and exciting destinations every year, nice places such as Dallas, Texas, Myrtle Beach, Chicago, etc. APA only goes to Las Vegas.
TAP has Rally at Edison dream team event....an annual National tournament with over 150 teams participating every year inside the Allen Hopkins Super Billiards Expo where players can shop, watch and play with the pros.
1 in every 18-20 teams go to TAP Nationals, where APA is about 1 in every 50 to 100.
TAP has a short road to climb to get to Nationals and to the money. Win locally, advance to Nationals. Every league in TAP can enter teams that win locally. Players can buy into singles and some leagues provide local tournaments and pay for singles as well. APA teams and players have to win multiple tournaments before getting to Nationals and many times have to travel to other cities at their own expense for regional tournaments..
TAP allows for a team maximum handicap of 25 vs. 23 in APA. Additionally, TAP handicaps tend to be one under APA. This allows teams to form higher level teams if they choose to do so.
TAP recently released a scoring application for iPad and iPhone that makes keeping score a breeze and the generated handicaps accurate. It will be released for Android later this year.
TAP handicaps are very accurate and fair across the board, as they are computer calculated on 5 weighted categories and APA handicaps appear to be more win/loss centric.
TAP is a technology driven league and always evolving, with the recently released Scorekeeper, Who's the Best, Xtreme, Scotch Doubles and 10-ball.

I could go on and on....but that's all for now.

Cindy,

I've played in your Vegas league. Not for long as I shuttle back and forth to Rochester. My friend Jerry Sceusa played in the league for years. Wish you could get him back in but that's another story. Enjoyed playing in a very well run league. I can attest as to the number of teams you send to Nationals and Rally to the Valley. Met up with you and the Kuhler in Oaks, PA a couple of years ago. Keep up the good work.

Lyn
