What are the rules for bridge head sizes ?

Just curious, are there any rules for the size and or shape for bridge heads
used for competative play (9-ball,8-ball, 14.1,etc.) ?

I am not aware of any rules concerning what the size of a mechanical bridge-head can be, but then I haven't been to as many rodeos as some people on this site have been to. Most rules concerning equipment are geared towards what cues (jump, phenolic tip/ferrule, weight, etc.) can or cannot be used. I hope you get more help from someone more educated on this subject than me.

Seems to me that if a bridge head gets too large, it's use becomes problematic. Too large to fit in tight spots between balls, for example...

There are no rules regarding the size of a bridge head that I have ever seen.

The only rule regarding accessories that I am aware of is along the lines of... Devices used at the table must be designed for their particular use... or something similar in meaning.

Here's a pic of my jump bridge, which is over-sized relative to a regular bridge.

Hmm, I remember reading in the rules (a couple of years ago) that you could stack two bridges on top of one another but no more than two. So I would think if they want to rule against that, they should probably restrict the size too, or else a determined bridge-stacker could just get around the rule by using a gigantic bridge. Never saw a rule on bridge size though. Loophole! :grin-devilish: :grin-square:

Good question and I don't know the answer (LOL). The pool hall I frequent has the normal bridges on each table. Additionally, they have two very unique bridges that are not dedicated to any table. One is a simple v shape that has two legs that can be placed directly above a ball. The v groove is elevated about 7". The other bridge has the same two legs and elevation but has three v's. Both are made of brass and very heavy. I've only used them myself a few times playing 14.1.

At home I've got the simple plastic bridge that can be interlocked horizontally, vertically or crossed.

This link show some bridge heads.

Quick BCAPL response

In short, BCAPL has no restrictions on bridge head size. However, most governing bodies, including BCAPL, will restrict equipment based on the spirit of the game, and reserve the right to restrict equipment that they have not had a chance to evalute.

More details later...

Thanks !

Thanks for the input from everyone ! I'm currently in the process of making
a bridge head out of plexi-glass for my wheel chair bound friend,
Kenny "Wheels" Nottle. I don't ever recall ever hearing anything specific
about bridge heads for any type of player or game.
