What are the true snooker rules?

The official rules are on the IBSF website: http://ibsf.info

I know you don't want to read them, and your friends probably will refuse to use them, but there they are.

Try watching the videos that are linked to in other threads. Many of them have amazing breaks (runs in the US) and you will learn the rules by osmosis.

Well the basics are so basic i'd have thought you only need to watch a few frames to pick up the rules. It's the miss rule that is the one that causes so much grief as even when read it's not perfectly clear but for newcomers to the game it's irrelevent as it's only there really for the pros.

Fouls are between 4 and 7 points depending on which balls are involved. No cushion contact is ever required in snooker. If you don't know about the "free ball" rule after a foul, you may want to read the rules about it.

why not just read the rules so you will know?

You want someone to explain, well as far as you know the players you play with already did! If you don't agree with their explanation, read the rules, print them out, put them in your cue case, and the next time someone your playing with does something silly, correct them, and then break out the rules to support your explanation.

Then, most likely, you will have to go back to playing by house rules just as you already do if you continue to play in their game.

Look, the best thing is to find playing partners who want to play by the rules if you feel that strongly about it.

The object of snooker pool is to receive the most points in a game. The players take turn "potting" the balls. The red balls must sink to gain a point. If one player fails to "pot" a ball, the turn passes to the opponent. When the first player sinks a ball, the turn remains until they miss a shot. You can also receive points if the other player "fouls." Several online websites are available to play snooker pool.
