Anyone use a sledgehammer, or have tried one before? Im in the market for a new break cue, i have about $300 to spend.

I was looking at the Jerico Stingers, i saw one in person, they look real nice.

anyone have any other suggestions in this price range?

X-Breaker or Predator BK seem to be the best.

I am saying this, and I own a Sledgehammer, so that must tell you something. Somtimes the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence.

haha good intel... i actually just sold my BK so that must tell YOU something ;)

Very good prolecat! I have been breaking with a custom Sledge for years. I have probably sold more than 20 here on AZ. There really isn't any "BEST BREAK CUE", only opinions. I have an old Mucci 97-15, 21 oz that breaks em up as good as anything out there. I personally believe it is a matter of what you can afford and what you like. I know this isn't going to help you make a decision. I will suggest that you get out there and try them all and then make your decision.

Yea, seems like my break is weak, so i would prefer to have a phenolic, or hard type tip. I dont have much problems controlling the cue ball... i have good control and accuracy.. i just cant put as much of my weight into it yet as some other people can.

Grrrr... ive sold 2 BK's already, i really have a distaste for the way they break... but i always find a good deal on one and tell my self its better than nothing. then i sell it and now im in the same situation stuck with no break cue.

I have a X Breaker 2nd Gen. I have been getting the best results with the X breaker then any other break cue I have owned or tried. They are 350 without the wrap I think.

great cue, I highly recommend it.

Im a little hesitant to drop 350 on something called in "xbreaker", it hasnt been on the market for long has it? These forums is the first time i heard about it, if i find someone with one then maybe i will try it and see how it feels. I dont really like the way they look either :(

I've owned most production break cues and a few custom ones. I stuck with the Stinger once I tried it. Been using it for about 2 years or so. This morning, I talked to Jerico about getting an IPT legal shaft. Seems one of our local poolrooms is following suit with IPT and is planning to make phenolic tips illegal in their tournaments. No big deal. I broke and jumped with one of the leather tipped IPT Stingers in Padre Island and it performs very well.

Like Purdman said, personal preference, but my personal preference is definitely the Stinger. If it's good enough for Robles, Morris, Bassavich and Massey, it's good enough for me.

Thanks, im definately leaning towards that, just got to find a decently priced ebony one, i can get a cocobolo for 270, but i like the look of the ebony.

The best one I've hit with is the Mace by Rick Howard, and at $325, it's just about at your price range.

I have a sledgehammer j/b I got used off ebay for $180. For that money, I don't think you can beat it. It wasn't a problem for me that it was used, since it's virtually indestructible :D I'm sure it still hits just as well as it ever did, and it makes jumping full balls seem quite easy.

The X Breaker felt and looked impressive to me when I tried it at VF. I might have gotten one if they were in stock (I wanted to come home with a break cue)

I ended up getting a Fury J/B because I got a good deal on one that I couldn't pass up. It's much like a sledgehammer and they regularly go for about $145.

Yeah, the fury is a great breaker too. My father got one of those as he was on a more limited budget. Plus we had 300 dollars in Fury bucks from beating the pros there a few times and were able to get 30percent off the cue.

break cue

I have a blackheart custom break cue, breaks better than any other that i have tried x-breaker, stinger.

Also the Bunjee X-Pro by Steve Lomax....very good, well made and the balls explode on the break.

Bunjee also do a cheaper version called the blaster which is easily on a par with the Sledgehammer.

I've had a Fury J/B since they came out and am sold on it. It does a great job for me.

I have had a mace, stinger, predator bk, omen, and a bk2. The stinger is great for jumping balls esp. full ball jumps close with a full cue. The BK is great for breaking.

Mace is basically a custom cue that has a jump cut in it. Recommended.

I am now carrying the BK2 and an Omen grey ghost. The extra length in the jump handle on the Omen is a great idea. The BK2 is really great- new construction- not sure if it as good constructionwise- but I really am starting to like it.

Depends on where you play and what you need. If I played anywhere with the leaded cueball I would have a sledge. I like the sledges for jumps but breaking I think you need a dedicated cue. I have a j/b in addition for places that allow you to break down your stick.

BTW, I am now playing with a bluegrass and it gets over the balls in a lot of standard positions.

Hey prolecat-

I understand your concerns. It is a relatively new product and some of them canbe alittle on the unattractive side but I can tell you that after having used everything from an Andy Gilbert to a Mike Webb to a Predator BK to a Sledgehammer, to a Stinger, to an Omen, to a you name it... this cue is by far the best. Richard has really done amazing things with this cue! It breaks a ton and a half. I get an incredible spread every time and often keep my cueball in or around the center of the table.

And as far as jumping goes, this cue is ten times more accurate than anything on the market. I love the X-Breaker and, if you think this is just someone hawking a product that he owns, its not. I don't even own one... yet!!! I have several friends who use them and they are unrivaled in both jumping and breaking!
