This thread is about 24 hr. places for Pool, or at least,
an after hours place where the games can go on.

What do you feel these places do for Pool in your area of
the woods.

Here, in Wichita, when Maurice 'PaPa' Burke was alive, he
had a low rent motel and Steakhouse on South Broadway.
He opened at 4 pm everyday, and stayed open until 6 am
the next morning. The back room had 1 bar table in it,
the bathrooms at the end, and booths all the way around
the table on 3 sides. The booths could accomodate probably
60-70 people crowded in. The table was like being in a little
bowl area.

Games would start up 5 or 6 many days, but the real action
usually started about 10 pm at the night, and continued
most of the time till 6 the next morning. Players would play
challenge games for $10 or $20 a game, and quarters would
be sliding off the table there were so many. Back then it was
only a quarter for a game of 9 ball. Someone usually got matched
up every night, usually quite a few, for at least a $100 set, and
many times into the thousands. All the road players across the
country knew of Burkes on their way through here. I remember
the night that Buddy Hall came in like it was yesterday.

I know that when I go to Oklahoma City, usually for a tournament,
I always make a point to stop by Mikey's 24 hour place because
of the action going on.

These types of places cater to the players, mostly money players,
and you don't have to put up with ball bangers, or dates, even if
they do happen by, it is ONLY to watch the big money games going
on. Anyone not observing their Pool manners are quickly told to shut
up and sit down and be quiet.

Where do you go after the bars close to continue a game?

Where you ever in his house?

Burke's Steak House also had some pretty good steaks.
He invited me back to his house and you couldn't believe it. It was like a bunker defended against the rest of the world. There were some pretty incredible stories about PaPa Burke and the Texas Mafia.
He had a horseshoe shaped bar with real silver studed saddles for bar stools. He loved (and catered to) action. I saw many great games there including Louie vs Greg Stevens - Mataya vs Flyboy - Matlock vs One-eyed Tony, etc. I always made money there - AND - if PaPa Burke liked you, you couldn't have any trouble. No Body Messed With Him.
It was a hellava place & a hellava man.

There are no 24 hr pool rooms in Miami. Hollywood Billiards which is north of Miami about 15 miles is the most player friendly pool hall as far as hours. They close when the action is done and in most cases that means somewhere near dawn. The last 24 hr pool room I played in was at Blanding Billiards in Jacksonville. Things there didnt usually start up until after midnite and in many cases not until 2 or 3 am after everyone left Harley's, little David's or Riggsy's.

I love 24 hr pool rooms. There is something about playing pool and seeing the sun come up that reminds me of a time in my life when I didnt have a mortgage, didnt have so much family commitments and didnt work 50+hrs a week. Not that I would trade all that in to be back there again, no way---but it still makes me smile thinking of all those degenerate days and nights.

Raytown Recreation used to be open 24/7 until approx 2 years ago. Now it closes between 1-4 (depending on business) and opens @ 11am, except on weekends, there is still the occassional "All Nighter" but nothin like it used to be.
Personally, 24 hour Pool Halls are tough for a player playing "On the Natural" to fade when matched up. It is tough to out last the "Chemical Warfare".
ALWAYS post up when playing in a 24 hour room. Nothing sucks more than playing 36 straight hours, running out of gas, while your opponent goes to the bathroom to get that "powdered 8 hours of sleep", to come back fresh and ready to go, to get even then quit. Then ask for help paying his half of the time...... TREACHEROUS! Oh the lessons learned..

The only places that i know of in my area of Michigan that are 24hrs is Anazah Sands West and East, In Grand Rapids, Mi.

I seriously dont know what they do for the area cuz i dont live in GR, but i know Anazah West normally has people playing till the weeeeee hours of the morning.

I wouldn't know...

But, I do know that I used to work at a 24hr place in Arlington, VA. Like Uwate, I miss my degenerate days but have no desire to revert. Point? There was always action in that spot, cabbies in& out, foks coming in before and after work. Man, that was fun!

Is Burkes still open? I haven't beenthrough there in years. Helluva place.
Also, where in the world is Jr Brown? If this involves being guest of the state, you don't even have to answer.

Corner Pocket in Kenner, LA is great. You can go there to find action at almost any hour, except maybe from 6am til noon, but the managers would match up with you if they aren't busy getting their pizza business stuff together for the next day. If you stay for more than a couple of hours, they will call in action if you want it. Pretty good one hole players in and out of the place as well.
