I usually stand off to the side, stick in hand, and try to predict the order he'll run it out. I feel like it's a good mental exercise. Even if he has no chance to run it out, I try to think about what order of events can break out his balls, make his shots, where he might safety me. Last night I remember one table where I thought in my head "4, 7, 1, 8." And was correct in that, but was surprised when he came for a different leave off of the 4 to get the 7, to give himself a cleaner make on the 1 and drop the 8. Seeing how I was wrong about the way he'd play the 4 helps me moving forward, giving me new ideas for playing a similar situation (he had to deal with some balls on the rails).
