I have always thought that calling the balls soldiers is a good way to make people understand that those balls have value on the table and you don't automatically drop them because they are easy to make. Those easy balls fairly close to the pocket are often blocking easy pocketing for the other player. Tying the other player up long enough to be an irritation can put boards in their head!
Let them be the one to clear messes whenever possible. Of course that is clearing messes without costing you. Reading clusters is something rarely discussed in detail but that can be a big part of play. Sometimes your opponent's soldiers are palling around with yours and they can be used by you. A legal shot using your opponent's ball can dig the spurs in a bit!
