What do you guys think?

It depends.

Here in Orlando there are a couple of pool halls with 9 ball or one pocket action, mainly Jimmy's. One pocket seems to be the game of choice here for the better players.

If I were to go to Click's in Casselberry in the afternoons, I am more likely to fit in better because most of the guys there are playing 14.1 there (sometimes if you're lucky you'll even see Mike Sigel playing there on a Wednesday afternoon).

So around here, it depends where you go and when - and why...

Most of the people I play 14.1 with don't even have a grasp of the rules, nevermind knowing how to play correctly - so I am mostly playing 1 pocket and 9 ball around here - and I suck at one pocket.

:(

I'm in a college town. It makes for a strange crowd. We have about 4 of us that regularly play straight while about 3 of us play one pocket. The rest is 8 or 9. We that play 14.1 or 1 hole usually stick in a fairly tight group but we will play a little 8 ball. None of us play 9 unless we have too and we generally never play on the bar boxes.

As a side note. We have a 12 foot snooker table that gets a good work out due to the large amount of European and Asian students.

The biggest reason you don't see many games in my hall other than 8 or 9 is that drinking and straight pool or 1 hole don't mesh well. The college kids want to get loaded and have instant gratification. I really feel that people don't want to invest the time....

Thanks

The few pool rooms in my area seem to have focused their attention on testing jukebox speakers and sound systems for how freaking loud they can make them before either they blow or the customers ear drums shatter.

Sadly IMO pool rooms aren't what they used to be and for that reason, I rarely go to one at all anymore.

I have very bad problems with high pitch sounds or loud noises. Because of that, I must wear ear plugs when I am around loud music. There is a room here in Orlando (Tight Rack) that has their music extremely TOO TOO LOUD. I went there when it first opened - and I kid you not - the music was so loud that you could see the balls vibrating on the table bed like their was a friggin earthquake or something. Why anybody needs to hear anything that loud is beyond comprehension.

Keep in mind that my oldest son is a musician and at one time was playing Grindcore, deathmetal - I was able to tolerate that noise better than the sound levels at most pool halls. That's sad! lol

Here in Japan it's 9-ball. No 8-ball, no one pocket, no banks, no straight pool, only 9-ball. To top it all off they usually have ring games going. Points on the 5 and the 9. They always get into groups of 3 to 5 or 6 players and get that ring game going. I don't see how they don't get burned out on it. 9-ball bores me to tears anymore. I have 2 or 3 people that I can shoot straight pool with and they didn't start playing it until I coaxed them into it. One of the guys loves 14.1 now but I feel the other 2 would rather play 9-ball. In 17 years of playing pool over here I've only run into 1 person that likes to play one pocket and he was a pro that was visiting the guy that owns the room I play it. It's hopeless over here.
