what do you play with?

I have a break cue and an older Falcon. I have a shaft coming for a Joss butt and looking to get a few more cues. I'm starting APA in January, play pools halls and bars too.

My question is... Do you have a different set up for where you play?

Like league night use the top notch cues and case or use that at cash matches?

I guess it doesn't matter, but I don't want to get jumped in the parking lot and dislike house cues...

My previous set up(joss w/ Z2 shaft) was only worth a few hundred, but I played at league with that all the time. I've since dropped that in favor of a cut bar cue. Whatever works for you. :embarrassed2:

Just cause of the crowding and convenience , I usually bring a stripped down setup on league night or BS local Tounys.

Simple 2x2 tube case , 1 player and 1 J/B.

Otherwise my full 'Rig' is a white python inlayed leather 4x2 , a Player w/ 2 shafts , a Breaker and a dedicated Jump Cue. Weighs a ton , makes me worry if left out of sight.

I would find a quality cue that you are comfortable with and it hits great for you and roll with it. There are cues that I will not take to certain placed out of fear of getting stolen or damaged.

For me, I use an old Schon R6 for playing in decent places and I am going to start useing an old Gilbert j/b for the bars and league if I decide to do that one day. I have over 800 in the R6 and less than 375 in the Gilbert.

The Schon is not a real high end cue compaired to what you see for sale here every day and had a few finish issued, but, it sure does play solid and I like the way it hits. I would hate to loose that cue and won't take chances with it.

I don't like playing with a different cue every time, that's why I have my own.

I play w/ my D19 Mcdermott that I've had for 25 yrs. Even though I have a few cues that are on the more expensive side of things. No longer play leagues though, too hard to get up at 5 am for work the next morning when I'm in town. When I'm on the road I play w/ whatever piece of wood is hanging on the wall.
I put my D19 away for a few years and played w/ various other cues. About 4 months ago I wasn't happy w/the way I had been playing so I brought it back out..... was like playing w/ an old friend. Instantly improved my game.

Had my Harry J Richards (plain jane) for 22yrs now. It is my only cue. Wish I could get in touch with him as it might be time for a new shaft.

Merry Christmas all,
Carl

I do not play league anymore, but when I did I took my designated "bar" buffalo Instroke with my regular player and my regular break, as well as anything I may need during the 4 hour evening. I have never taken a fully loaded 3x5 or bigger anywhere except traveling. If it is a shady place, I take a cheaper leather 1x2 and my back up cue that i am familiar with, which is way cheaper than my player. I usually take the same setup as I did league when I go to practice as well.

Started playing in '87 & bought a new Adams so I wouldn't have to play with house cues. In '89 bought a '69-'72 era Joss & the Adams became my break cue. The Joss has stiff hit but has been my daily player for years.

Found an unidentified Rambow-ish cue in '89 that is probably from the 40's or 50's (according to it's history of ownership). It is slightly lighter and has a softer hit.

I like to have both with me so I can choose based on cloth & conditions.

A couple of years ago I bought a "had to have it" Scruggs - beautiful & I love the hit. Problem is I play mostly bar box 8 ball - no matter how I tried to hide/protect it some idiot finally found a way to knock it over - "shaft dingy" - so now I will only take it with me to pool halls and not bars

Yeah the next few cues I aquire I want them nice and new.

My Falcon and Joss butts are beat so I don't mind them so much. The shaft is smooth but blued on the Falcon. The Joss is getting a bdcue ss360 shaft so I'll be more apt to keep a closer eye on that one.

I shoot good with the Falcon but have my heart set on the Joss. I'd like to get another Joss here soon.

Getting jumped in the parking lot has nothing to do with league night.

Do what you need to do to be safe. But if safety isn't the issue, bring your primary cue.

My similar story was that my first night on abar league team, I brought my cue... My prized plain Mali. This was 1988. I asked my team captain if it was a wise ideas for me to bring my expensive (I paid $100 for it after all) into such a rough and tumble place. I didn't want to get jumped or ridiculed as a Prima Donna. He assured me I would be fine.

My fears were allayed as yours will be. Most of the players had their own cue (even way back then) and mine was on the lesser expensive side. There were plenty of adorned McDermotts, Vikings and even a Palmer.

You'll be fine. I on the other hand still get ridiculed as a Prima Donna. Oil Well.

Freddie <~~~ misses that old Mali

Thanks cornerman. I like to be prepared for anything. Just don't want a lot of hard earned money to walk away.

Thanks for all the input guys!

Break with a Predator BK2.
Play with a Scruggs with a z2 shaft. I could never get used the shafts it came with.

Cues

I don't play in bars, I only play in Pool rooms. My regular Pool room is pretty safe, and besides they have cameras in the Pool room.

I just play with a Shurtz SP right now, and break with a J&J Break/Jump cue, but I am getting a cue made in February after my pension starts.
I have a 3 x 5 case, so there is room for the new cue in the case, and I am sure I will be a little more careful after getting the new cue.

Bowmer - me too! Same 25 yr old d-19 that I bought new. Great hitting cue!

depends where you're going

Currently I carry a sterling 4x8 case for league...

I've had to help out a teammate from time to time and usually when they were coming from work, or didn't get their breaker out...

Currently in the quiver is:
Madden TM1024
Chuck Starkey
Chester Krick
Dieckman "kokopelli in the sky with diamonds"

With 6 - 3/8 10 shafts (the Starkey is a wood pin and the Krick is 3/8-11 for both only one shaft)

It may be a few ducats, but that's what teammates are for and I've felt comfortable the places we go...

In the past few years, I had a few concerning experiences taking my favorite cues into new pool rooms. I haven't had to worry about the parking lot, but there are too many instances of items being stolen in the commotion of league play. My biggest concern has been that people no longer show the courtesy of not touching a cue without permission. Two of my cues are the types that I would not allow others to handle. Three times people have tried to grab one without asking. I went to quite a bit of effort to find a cue to my liking where I feel more comfortable around strangers. I use an old Joss production butt with a new shaft that i like a lot. It plays great and doesn't draw attention. I also have a great Meucci S/P that i've owned for 20 years. I would be disappointed if either was harmed, too. But the expense and replacability factors reduce the potential for loss.
