what do you really look at?

do you look at the cue ball or your tip when your tip is moving back and forth?

The Laser Line

I recently started to first look at the contact point from the pocket through the OB, then draw back an imaginary line from that point on the OB to the cue tip, (like a laser line) adjust english & speed and fire. It works very well for me if there is an angle between say 20 degrees and 70-75 degrees. Also works great on straight-ins.

This is how I have played all my shots since I was a kid, line the shot from back of the pocket to OB, then I look at that point while stroking my shot, thats where I'm looking on my final release of the shot, the OB.

it's natural we look at the cue tip when it moves towards a cue ball because we want to make sure we hit the cue ball in a certian point precisely. That said, it's not generally CB we look at, but a correct hitting point. So our eyes go back and forth between OB contact point and CB hitting point IMO.

Hmmm.

Usually one of the pretty waitresses, of which there are many in my league !!!

Usually burning a hole into the cue ball with my eyes, but as the tip comes back from my bridge, I'm glancing to make sure it doesn't touch the cue ball. But majority of time, it is the cue ball.

: ) I was really expecting to be made fun of for that.

Superstitiously, I don't think it should be discussed. Call it Zen, call it Fight Club, I just don't like to think about it directly. That bothers me big time.

Why would you be made fun of? One thing that everyone needs to understand is that you are not unique. Every miss that you've had, we've had it to. Every great jump shot you've done, we've done it too. Every great three rail kick, yep, been there done that. We all experience the same things in this game. Being blank during a great shot or great run is far and few between but instead of being ashamed of it you should try to find a way to always be like that.....which is impossible. My best string of racks is 7. Yes, I had 7 break run outs in a row. Funny thing is that I wasn't even aware that I had run all those racks until after the 7th one when I marked my score. I realized that the other guy hadn't scored anything and I was at 7. While he was racking I thought about it and I said to him "Did I just run 7 racks?" he said yeah, keep it up! There were people on the tables on either side of us sitting down watching. I hadn't even noticed them being there. And to be honest, to this day I can't remember even one shot that I made that entire set. But I tell ya this, as soon as I was aware of what was going on it was over. I broke, made 3 balls on the break and was hooked behind the 5. Only thing I had was a kick. I kicked at it and didn't even come close to hitting it. The run was over. I would give anything to be in that state of total unawareness again. It's only happened like that once in my entire 25 years of playing this game. Oh, I've had short spurts of that with 2 and 3 in a row but that 7 is my all time high.

Oh, I think I look at tip/cueball.

cueball

i just try not to go cross-eyed :p
all kidding aside...
  • i find the desired line to the OB and keep my focus on it until i drop down into my shooting stance behind the CB...
  • ... i then shift my focus onto the CB trusting that my stance and stroke are aligned properly...
  • i take a few practice strokes checking that the spot on the CB is where i want to deliver the tip, then i shoot...
... and miss often because i'm still new at this lol
