What do you use to break with?

Same Schon I've used for twenty plus years. Couldn't even tell you what kind of tip is on it now. Been on the end of the shaft for at least five years. Go ahead and tell me I'll make more balls and have better cue ball control with a $500 break cue. I'm waiting!

lmao.

actually i do not break any better with my brick with a white diamond tip than i do with my 11 year old viking with a buffalo tip. i switched to the brick because i have to use a full cue to jump in apa and the brick jumps a lot better.

shoulda seen the uproar that ensued the 1st time i made a jump in apa. the captain of the opposing team " used to be a team mate who quit and started his own team " said ...HEY ...YOU CAN'T DO THAT !.

i replied ..if you are gonna be a captain you better learn the rules. he took off across the room to ask the lo. of course the lo told him it was legal as long as it was a full cue.

later that night when i saw the lo he said...i did not know you could jump. i said i did not know either. i told him it was the 1st time i ever tried and not only did i make the jump but sunk the ball i was shooting at . we both got a laugh out of that.

Cues

if I am breaking a hard or fast break I have several custom cues, 'any of them work fine with a triangle tip.
I am dropping balls on most of my breaks, and don't really see the need for a break cue.

Going to run right out and buy that OB I was looking at. Wait a minute, maybe it was a BK3. No, no, Orange Crush for sure. Or was it a Jacoby? Hell, might as well just buy them all!

After careful re-consideration, I'll keep using my Schon and suffer! ;) :p

Thanks for the smile!!!!

I have an Alex Brick break cue and it's great, but honestly my best breaks are with my play cue.
That's just because I've broken a heck of a lot more racks with a regular cue than a specialized tool like a dedicated breaker.
Love breaking with a regular stick, with a regular tip.
Hate phenolics.

I have a viking break cue that came with a phonolic tip. It has a le pro on it now. I always had trouble miscuing with the phenolic tip. It didnt hold chalk and i could only hit dead center or i would miscue.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. I have a Mezz PBII and it came with a phenolic tip and I HATED that thing! Miscuing left and right (and I almost never miscue otherwise). I put a Samsara on it and love it! Something unnatural about those phenolic tips. Although, I did see some company advertising a jump/break tip that is phenolic in the center and leather around the outside. That is somewhat intriguing as it might be the best of both worlds. Think I'll stick with the leather though. That Samsara scuffs up nice and holds chalk pretty well and most importantly, I don't miscue anymore (nothing more embarrassing than miscuing on the break).

I use a 16oz McDermott Stinger with a Samsara leather tip. Usual break speeds are 21-22.5, but have hit 30mph with it.

What did the great players break with?

Here's a question: when playing nine ball or eight ball in the good old days (1960s and 70s), did the champions and great players like Lassiter, Worst, Kelly, Cornbread, etc. use their playing cues to break or did they have dedicated break cues even back then? I'm guessing most used their playing cues but do not know. Thanks.

Cheapo Action break cue with phenolic tip and ferrule. Took me a long time to feel comfortable that I would not miscue with the phenolic but can use English now on the break. Usually make at least one ball on the break except on table #3 in my poolroom. Impossible to make a ball on an 8 ball break on that table. LOL.

Same with me, cuz of APA rules requiring full size jump cues, I have an inexpensive J &j jump/break, with a phenolic combination tip/ferrule (after the original phenolic tip-only came off, after a few years of use).

I too love the looks you get when you pull off a jump shot in APA. I'm not particularly great at it, but I can usually jump a half to 3/4 ball most of the time, in a pinch. Making the object ball is a bonus! :p

My J&J has been a darned good value for the $60 I paid. Would I like a Predator or other fancy break cue, sure, but this does a great job for not a lot of money.
