In the past few weeks, I have been in both Borders and Barnes and Nobles book stores. Naturally, I looked for a pool magazine to sit and read, and found nothing in both stores. While I searched everywhere, I ran across publications on smoking pot and railroad train building, amongst other obscure things, but no pool periodicals. What does it say that there are multiple magazines about drugs, but none on pool? Can't be all that good!

I just looked today in Barnes and Noble and same thing. I do remember one time requesting that a store carry Billiards Digest, and they ordered it. Unfortunately not enough sales so they discontinued it six months or so later
Hell with them we have AZ and Youtube and TAR!

Im sorry to say in my home town and surrounding area i have never even seen a pool related magizine in the local stores or book stores. Thats why i am so grateful to the founders and members of AZ forum for all the info that i have recieved in the last month or so.

circulation for magazines is getting harder and harder. The largest retailer of magazines is walmart and borders and barnes and noble are in the top of course. These chains operate on a sell through basis whereby if they order 1000 magazines and the periodical doesnt sell a certain percentage, say 70%, then they order less next time. The problem is its often a downward spiral where the magazine next gets a 500 order and doesnt hit 70% and it goes to 250. The magazine has a hard time getting advertising, the substantial drops in circulation affect budget and makes the title worse and the consumer sees this and reacts by not buying. Next thing you know the field of niche magazines gets smaller when the large chain drops them. The larger chains are getting more and more of the lions share of distribution so if you get dropped by them its a terrible blow.
Right now, its an extremely tough market for print publications. Billiard Digest should be going great guns to try to get their titles into higher sales with digital format, like for example here www.zinio.com . The revenue from this is not going to match what they use to get from newsstand and subscription sales, but you have to monetize as much in different channels as possible these days.
