What does repeal of this law do for Pool? Sports Betting!

I feel if you are betting on some thing that you have no direct control in the outcome, you are playing a game of chance. That should in some way be regulated.

If you are betting on something that you can influence the outcome based on your participation, then you should be free to do it, provided you are not betting against yourself.

Why should someone who has ZERO business in a bet have any right* to "regulate" such bet?

It might take awhile

Legalized gambling for pool can mean lots of things. It probably wouldn't change much for your local poolroom though. As stated, calcuttas and gambling already exist and I doubt any changes in the law would have any impact.

That said, the pro events could definitely see a change. Betting on major events already happens in Europe and the recent introduction of FargoRatings actually put the necessary structure in place to bring gambling to the next level. The only problem I foresee is making sure the professionals are appropriately compensated. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the only way to make sure gambling doesn't taint the outcome is to make winning better than losing.

I agree but that might take awhile to happen. Pool isnt mainstream here due to the demise of it. Its that way everywhere to a degree but I think its worse here. When the numbers of viewers get up there, then is when sponsors and larger pots start to happen.

I don't know. Being able to make a wager on a pool tournament might change things. It's like horse racing. I have zero interest in horses. Like, I couldn't be more disinterested. But, when the Kentucky Derby is on TV, I can't look away and I'm often making a wager.

Legalized gambling for pool could actually improve ratings. People might have a sort of "When In Rome.." sort of attitude about it. I think a lot of Americans would be very interested in betting on The Mosconi Cup. I also think that would be a great event for betting since wagers are already accepted overseas and losers get paid. There's also more at stake at the Mosconi Cup. If players weren't celebrities before, they leave as celebrities. I'm guessing but I would argue that players genuinely see a boost to their sponsor list and overall revenue just being a part of it.

Considering the gambling and advertising laws are what killed the IPT (aside from the guy being a shady hustler himself and getting jail time), it can only get better. The major sponsors for overseas tournaments are all gaming web sites, just look at some of the World Cup, Mosconi Cup, etc... matches at the banners. dafabet, betfair, etc..

Outside of cigarette and liquor ads (which laws also killed), really not a lot of advertisers aside from gambling and card gaming sites would match well in the poor world. Past of course the billiard companies like Diamond, McDermott, Simonis, etc.. As much as we'd like to be like golf and have Rolex and Mercedes toss money at the sport, I don't see much of an expansion happening that way. Maybe Nike or some other "hip" apparel or accessories company can work with pool as well. Zippo?

Heck, if marijuana becomes legal in more places, that would be a great match for sponsorship LOL, probably 50% of players are already customers.

Legal gambling on pool online would make pool like Snooker in the UK. Need a players/ promoters/poolrooms organization, tweak the IPT model, purses @ 25k, qualifiers at $300 or so to get on players list. TV will come along with sponsors. IMO it would work if done right. Johnnyt

Because there are an awful lot of shady people out there that others need to be protected from.

I didn't ask about your ends, but your means. I agree that there are tons of crooks out there. My point is your means are crooked, too, so how does that help?

And btw, when has a govt ever brought about good ends with bad means?

Gambling is illegal?
Nick :)

Yes Nick, Gambling, in the USA is legal everywhere. Here is what some folks get confused with...

If you want to play someone a race to 25 9B for $500.00 and he agrees to play you, and the winner walks away with the 1K in the middle there is no law broken - this type of action is legal everywhere in the USA.

Same applies to a poker game you hold at your house where you sit down and play for cash - perfectly legal.

Here is what is not legal in all states -- If you want to run a booking service where you take action on pool matches and apply the Vig, like Vegas casinos do, you are operating an illegal operation.

If you have a home poker game and you act as the house, not a player, and are raking every pot for 5% then you are running an illegal gaming operation.

Hope this helps to clarify.
