What does your Bar/Room Owner do to make you

What does your Bar/Room Owners do to make you want to return again to play in their tournaments.

Anyone have any information about a Bar/Room Owners who is doing something creative to make you want to play in their tournaments again.

Here is the Valley of the Sun, I do not see much creativity on the part of Bar/Room Owners to build up their business through tournaments.

One of our local TD's holds "Bounty Trounaments". $20.00 entry fee, double elimination, every time you win you get $5.00 of that player's "Bounty". It's cool, you can get your twenty back, even though you may not pace in the money. He gets 25 - 30 players every time.

I run an 8-Ball and 9-Ball tourney every Sunday with a point system. If you show up to play you get a point and you accumulate more points for coming in 1st, 2nd or 3. Most players are competitive in nature and want those weekly points for bragging rights. I also give out awards and prizes ,from the beer distributors, for points and top 3 finishes at the end of the season (roughly 30 weeks). The tourneys are $5 entry per tournament and the system seems to keep them coming back. These are friendly tournaments and don't payout big dollars but we get a decent turnout (12 to 24 players) for a town of only 8,000.

Edit: I may have to try the bounty thing, sounds interesting.

You know, I find this thread really odd. I mean, what does an owner do to try to make you want to play in their tournaments??? That's kind of like saying, what did your parents do to try and make you want to open your Christmas presents? What could Tia Carrera do that would make me want to have dinner with her? I mean, maybe I'm assuming too much here but I already think hosting an event is a great thing. I've seen rooms buy entrants dinner & drinks which IMO is WAY OVER THE TOP.

:D We have one room in the Valley that collects an extra $1.00/player/tournament.

The buck goes into a bonus fund, and each tournament a number is drawn out of a bucket (1-31).

Say the tournament is held on the 13th day of the month, and 13 is drawn from the bucket, the bonus money is added to the prize pot.

There has been as much as 400.00 bucks added from the bonus fund.:D

My favorite local tournament had a guy named PoolSleuth who ran it - but he got really annoying and messed up and the owner kicked him out - but then all of the sudden he came back to run it wearing a blatant and obvious disguise and called himself some new name, yet the owners didn't seem to catch on. It was strange.

Matt <-- Couldn't resist.

Well you point is kind of valid, but in the Valley on any given night there could be as many as 5-8 tournaments to choose from.

Funny thing was when I lived in another state the owners were more creative in promotion, sponsorship, etc. They worked real hard to get player to their room/bar.

Also with the price of GAS to get to some of the tournaments sometimes after being there for 6-8 hours you ask yourself why did I make the trip for so little "Net" money.

Nice this about living in a place like NYC, SF, or Chicago the public transportation system is cheap, runs 24 x 7 x 366, and you need not have a personal car.

Not like that in the Valley, our closed public transporetation is 10 miles away.

We have only (2) room owner in the Valley that are what I would call creative, as far as making "their' tournaments a place you want to come too.

That has been done before....They put the kiabosh on it because it is illegal...

It also sets up a situation for argument....I am guessing this is being done on a something and under tournament...(Probably no more than 8)

Some 9 still under the radar playing as a 7 is probably laying and wait for the number to get drawn and when it does he will all of a sudden win the tournament.....All of a sudden he (or she) is going to have a "career" night.

The creative thing that the owner (and/or past manager) of the room I mainly play at does is actually goes around the room thoughout the night and talks with everyone in the league or tournament and makes them feel welcome.

I can't say I see that happening at any other room I go into.

Start ON TIME!

Have WRITTEN and posted rules - BCA rules. Don't be changing the rules every week.

If weeknight tournament, limit the "race to" or number of players so tournament is over at a reasonable hour. People need to get up early the next day.

Equipment (balls/tables) in good condition.

In my room I run tournaments every Friday,Saturday, and Sunday on Friday's the tournament is open to anyone just recently we've add a bounty and the numbers have started to pickup. Our bounty is that if a C level or lower beats an A level player they get $ 20. (entry to the tourney is only $ 10.) I have had to pay the bounty once both weeks that I have the bounty. The other thing I do is pay $ 40 to the top c level player from that night and also to the top female. I am starting to get over 20 players on Friday's. I am thinking about starting a rotation challenge where the pot will start at like $ 50.00 if a player clears all 15 ball in rotation he wins the pot. I might also pay out some to the lower levels players for making to like the 10 or 11 ball, I am still not sure what I want to do here.

Saturdays we usually draw 25-30 players and for that we are doing what we call a super series where everyone pays $ 15. $10 goes to the payout that day and some goes towards a final tournament at the end of the year. You get points each week and at the end of the season (25 weeks) the top 32 in the points will play for the extra money added. the added pot right now is over $ 1200 and we have an 8ball break pot that is at $ 600. I as a room owner have added $ 500 to the saturday super series.

We just started sunday's after christmas and they are getting around 17-20 players every sunday. I don't do anything special for this tournament and they still get a fairly decent draw.

I will say that all tournaments are played on 7' valley and dynamo barboxes with the tables open (no plugs). a small green fee is collected from each player ($ 1)

how true...I hate when we're waiting for someone who's "on their way"...IMO you know when it starts so be there at that time...

That is becuase you chose to live in the stix.....You moved into an area that is beyond the devolped areas and the city transit system has not grown out that far (yet)

I can understand moving out to a new develoment 10 miles out of the normal city limits, but you can't expect the transit system to all of sudden start going out that far when prior to that development there was nothing to pick up except for some lizards, coyotes and some bobcats.

Well, the average New Yorker doesn't take the train after a tournament. I mean, out here, you play in a tournament until 2am and you're taking a cab home so we can cancel that part out.

Still, I can't say we have multiple tournaments to choose from on a given night. Must be nice.

One of the places I go has a "Break Pot" it works like this

House puts in $50 to start
Anyone that wants to enter puts in a $1 per ticket
ONE ticket is drawn
That player is given one chance to break and run a 9 ball rack
The pot is divided by 9 and each ball has a dollar amount
Only ball that pays on the break is the 9
The only way to clear the pot is to break, make the a ball and run out
If you break, make three balls and miss the one, no money. Make the one and you get paid for all four balls and keep shooting.
The pot has gotten large at times, over $20 a ball.

It is fun and cheap.

It has died down a bit here though, the pool hall has continued to do this later and later to try and keep people there. This has not been working as the people who get put out early will not enter in the pot.

Above is a good idea few owners do, and it is FREE to say thank you, and mke you feel welcome.

NY City has a great Public Transit System, but have a Car there is expensive. I know my cousin use to pay like $700.00/month to park his car where he lived.

Monday night in the Valley there are like 12-15 tournaments to choose from.

I figure it cost about $.45/Mile to own, operate, insure, take care of,etc. a car in the Valley, or most place in the US.
