What finish to use on stacked leather?

I want to do a stacked leather wrap.
I have figured out how to do the leather part but I have no idea on what finish to put over the leather.

Help.

finish

I recently bought some burnishing liquid for tips. It stated on the front of the bottle that it is also for use on leather wraps. Might be worth a try. I also believe that I have seen some people use beeswax. Just melt it in and burnish it long enough to not be sticky anymore. I have a cue with a stacked leather wrap that feels like it was done that way. The beeswax kind of "fixes" the leather into place when it cools. Hope this helps -and hope I'm not misguiding you.

Some of the finishes I have seen looked more like a epoxy or Enron finish with a very deep gloss look like it really was a wrapless.

I would like to do a glass like hard finish that can be polished out smooth or level
and will not crack.
Not asking for much am I.

Low melting point of bees wax is 147 F. I do not know at what degree the wax starts to become soft or if that is low melting point ?

Im guessing you mean you want the look of a stacked leather but the feel of a wrapless.
I believe you would do it basically the same as a Irish linen one is done. You cut the wrap channel so once the leather wrap is in place you are a little less than flush. Then epoxy over it until it is flush. Then just treat it as a refinish from there on and use clear coat or what ever finish you use over whole butt. Obviously sanding when needed. Once whole butt is finished you will see the stack leather wrap, but to will feel like a wrapless.

if you want exactly how to do it i believe Chris Hightower lays out how to do it in his book. I believe he did it over Irish linen but same idea.

hope this helps...

If you are talking "Meucci" style I can't help you - that is far beyond what I can understand w.r.t putting clear over a fantastic leather grip. However - if you talk about products to prevent dirt build up and a good shine, I would recommend you to contact Tiger Products..

Of all the wraps I have installed I have never put clear on any of them, but Tiger Products have good stuff which should help you out to keep the job "safe" from dirt, chalk, sweat - for quite some time. Then mention to the end customer that the grip should be treated like a good pair of shoes!!! If not, take it back for a refinnish and charge him for it - thats what I do :)

I guess I am not sure what I want now, I wanted a hard clear finish, but if it will turn out like a Meucci then I will pass.
I don't want the finish to crack.

I will have to hunt someone down who has a SLW on there cue and see if they will let me hold the cue.

wrap

I have one with stacked leather wrap. It feels great when you are playing. If no one local to you has one - let me know. I will send you mine to try for a while.

I am going to the Reno bar box open next month.
David Jacoby should be there and I think will talk with him also there is usually some one there doing wraps and selling them.

I am humbled by your offer and can only say thank you but for right now I will pass.

I think I can talk with a few guys that will be in Reno and that will be enough for me to figure out how to do my own.
Thank you.
