What good's winning without bragging?

I'm only a B player but won against master player the other night; much like the same circumstances. He'd make some great shots only to get down to the last 3 or 4 balls and miss leaving me a easy out. I said something, not bragging and his come back was anyone can run 4 balls; true. Well against his partner I did have a few 7 ball runs and still think it was a little talent and a bit of luck. That's why when asked how I did I say I got lucky. On the other hand it proves the point anyone can have a bad or good day. I just happen to have a lucky one.

Don't you worry about it. Nobody is born knowing this stupid game and we all had to start somewhere.

If you think you are bragging, please keep it up, I wish more people would "brag" like you.

I played a guy that I normally beat 9 out 10 times. For whatever reason he beat me and for the next week or so, I heard from everyone how he was able to exploit my weaknesses and wax me (this is bragging). Need less to say, he lost to me 10-1 the next time we matched up.

Ah yes....I'm very careful about what I say when I win. A couple weeks ago I beat one of the best players in our local league in a straight up match. I had to be humble about the win because mine was similar to Andrews but I still had no problem telling people that I won. I just tempered it with reality because I know I've got to play this guy again and I don't want him coming at me with a vengeance. But...as stated...a win is a win.

what???

That is just silly talk.

That said, you might want to be careful about Stevie Moore. He might be setting you up.

Manning! Enjoy it! Brandon won't lose focus like that too many times!

DO YOU KNOW STEVIE???HE ROAD PLAYER, AND I BET HE HAS LAID OFF TO GET THE MONEY HIGHER ASK HIM!!!!I KNOW HIM , PLAY GOLF WITH HIM,LO LO :o

It depends.
A few years ago a young friend and I drove to Louisville, and spent a day and a half at the Derby City Classic. Just before we were to leave, my friend played a game of nine-ball with Grady Matthews for fifty bucks and beat him. However, Grady was unable to stay at the table because of an upcoming one-pocket match and had to leave. At that point my friend, and I packed up and headed for home.
During the six hour trip back he must have cellphoned at least twenty-five people to brag about how he had beaten the Professor out of fifty dollars. The kid was beside himself.
I never did tell him that if Grady could have stayed at the table, my young friend would have had his clock cleaned.
You kind of have to look at everything in perspective.

I beat Brandon Shuff in a 9-ball tournament last night. Winner's side, race to 5, I won it 5-3. He's by far the best player I've ever beaten, and the only player I've ever beaten who any of you would have heard of.

And for Brandon's sake (especially if he's reading this), I will admit that I didn't exactly "outplay" him. In a manner of speaking I did, since I won, but: of the 4 racks I won to get on the hill, one was a fluke accidental 9-ball I pocketed while kicking just to hit a ball after he played a good safe, and another was a dead 1-9 combo that just happened to sit up perfect for me after the break. Then when I was on the hill (4-3), I scratched on the break, and he was i the process of running out like water, never getting out of line, when he miscued on the 8-ball, leaving me a fairly routine shot with tricky, but not exactly difficult position to the 9. So of the 5 racks, I only really earned 2 of them

Anyway, I'm not the type of guy who just keeps a straight face and pretends he expected it all along after an upset victory; I feel the need to tell the world. So consider yourselves told.

Oh, and it was the second round of the tournament, and I managed a 5/6 finish out of a field of 22 or so.

-Andrew

Congratulations on your victory......here's a virtual beer... (_)8.....my treat lol

Brandon Shuff

Brandon is one heck of a player.
Winning against him in any venue is an accomplishment.
I also think Brandon is a class act and an asset to the game.
Definitely one of the "young guns".

Swapping stories like this are better than some of the junk on tv/cable.

It was a well written first person narrative. The emotional content is easy to relate to, especially if you have league experience.

Rule of thumb

If you ask yourself the question, 'Would I play him again the same race for a $100?'. If the answer is no, then you shouldn't brag. If the answer is yes, then you could enjoy a little bragging, just a little though.

I have always thought too much trash talking always comes back to bite you.

I think he's safe in this case.

Hey Andrew!

Sometimes you play better than your opponent and sometimes you play well enough to keep yourself in the match. Good things can happen in a close match. Happens all the time.

A win is a win! Enjoy it.

Andy

I concur

Well cong--on your win, but dont get to high on that fence crowing, as i think he will play you any time anywhere,a man has not beat me until he walks out with a pocket full of my money!! so if he is a gambler watch out he might be setting you up!!! JUST A WORD FROM THE WISE!!:p

Well said. You took the words right out of my head.
Cheers, Mark

It is really about winning.Yes. Yes. Fukc losing.

Winning is a byproduct of enjoying what you're doing in the first place. Worrying about the outcome ( which is what you're doing when it's all about winning ) is going to set you up for failure.
