Gosh of gollyg... maybe I'm getting old but I remember some incredible cues back in the day from even names like Meucci and Schon and others of course that had incredible Birdseye in them.

The base wood was the starting background, the pallette of the cue, with deep antique stain that brought out the gorgeous look of the wood..... and and and...

Did they leave us to Asia and collectors or, are they locked up in some of our grandfather's closets?

I am in no way attempting any disrespect to cue makers but,,,,,, it starts with the base forearm wood as the pallette.

Please If you can share some good wood.for the group......

Old growth trees.........back in the 70's & 80's, even the early 90's, the trees felled were much larger, heavier, thicker.....that's why some cue shafts
with the exact same dimensions can vary from one another by well over an ounce ......what's true for shafts is also true for forearms......
different wood today than 20 to 30 years ago.......anyway, that's my take on it.

Lots of the good stuff just isnt around anymore. What is has more people after it. Check out how many instruments get made a year that use hardwoods, high end furniture industry, veneer industry all kinds of people want pretty wood.

Plus you have the government closing off sources for various reasons.

Might

This might be why the Vollmer I had seemed to have superior wood, in the shafts and the butt . He may have access to older growth woods in Germany.

You would do better to post this in the "Main" Forum or even the "Cue and Case" Forum ..there is nothing for sale here.
