What happened to the best 2 out of 3 sets?

yeah i didn't undertstand that either, but thought it was just me getting confused... lol

anyone know anything?

Two out of three sets is a much better way to determine a championship.

A one set race ,however, is much more compatible for TV schedules. Either way the IPT needs to change what they've written on their website to help avoid confusion.

Either one long race to 15 plus or the same as the KOTH 2 out of 3 sets.

This was a very strange decision, the longer the match the better for such an important tournament.

I can only think that they must have made the decision to play just one race to 8 for the tv editing (as someone mentioned) and also for the drama. One race to 8, while not nearly as fair as best two out of three after six straight days of 10-12 hours of pool, is more dramatic because everyone knows it's just one set and one game can decide the outcome, as it in fact did.

Still, it would have been nice to know this while the match was being played, instead of reading in the coverage on the IPT website just before the final game, that "with Hohmann finishing this run with the 8 ball in the corner it now comes down to one game of 8 ball with Thorsten Hohmann breaking for $350,000!" I was like,

I hope they go back to 2 out of 3 sets in the future, it definitely helps take away the luck factor.
Also as I mentioned in an earlier post someone could run 8 and out and the other player wouldn't get to shoot in the final.

All this and they toss the finals for $250,000 up to 1 set. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

yeah they also sold tickets at the door this time. remember when they said they would never ever do that.....

QUESTION:
Why won’t you sell tickets at the door for spectators?

Answer:
Try to get a ticket at the door of the Masters for golf; try to get a ticket at the door for a Broadway play; try to get a ticket at the door at a World Series game - you can’t. The fact is if we are going to create a buzz and sense of urgency and status for this game, we are going to do things a little different than have been done in the past. Ticket prices for the events will be slightly higher than you have experienced in the past. We will not sell tickets at the door. If you show up at one of our events without a ticket you can not get in. Period. End of story. We will stop selling tickets to the event several weeks before the event starts. Why? Because this is about producing great television shows. We need to have good accurate information on how many people will be at each event to get the lighting right, the seating right, and all the other details right.

all and all i think it was a huge success though. i do agree they shoulda had the best outa 3 or some kind of longer race.

A race to eight is a little short IMO, but this was obviously done to make it better for TV. If they were to play a race to 15 it would take several hours to complete, how many people that aren't serious pool fans would stay tuned for three hours straight? Keep in mind they are trying to make this appeal to the general public not just serious fans.

I thought the same thing, I was very confused by only one set. 3 sets is almost a must, if a guy gets a bad roll, at least he has a chance to make up for it.

But I am glad it's not a race to 11 or 15, all the races should be uniform at 8 games since it fits with the whole tournament and all the stats.

So really a race to 8 in 3 sets can't be that long? maybe have a shot clock, not a real short one, but a shot clock so guys don't stand around for over 5 minutes.

I got a solution for the live TV, just run the finals on a 5 hour tape delay and edit the first 2 sets if it goes 3, I would even go for skipping the first set on TV, you would still get the deciding matches.

I also think they started off wrong. They should have had 7 people in each group. Everybody plays 3 matches the first day and 3 matches the 2nd day. The top 4 to advance and the bottom 3 go home. Then you go to groups of 5. Which means the guys would only have to play 4 matches a day. I believe this would make for more test of skill rather then just endurance. JMO

I thought that it was going to be best of 3 sets race to 8 per then thought it was a single race to 15 after I saw the site. It was only after they typed that "Thorsten Wins!" in the IPT site that I realized that it was a single race to 8.

It was too short for a finals match and somewhat felt bad for Marlon who only had 1 tough combo miss and a couple of dry breaks.:(

Sounds like the match took almost exactly two hours in it's entirity which would be plenty for TV, but not us pool players. Three sets could have gone 6 hrs, a mere sprint for the players who were accustomed to playing up to ten hours a day.

My thoughts exactly.

They spend 7 days and about 10,000 games of 8ball to decide the prize distrubution between last place ($2k) and 3rd place ($80k), a difference of $78k.

Then they spend only ONE race to 8 to decide between $99k and $350k, a difference of $251k! Does that make any sense?!

Today's match was just too close to decide a clear-cut winner of the two. Marlon only missed one shot (a combination shot) while Hohmann missed two shots (though Thorsten did scratched on a break).

The match and $251k was decided on who had fewer dry breaks, something that is almost entirely based on luck. Marlon had 4 dry breaks and Thorsten only had 2. The dry break factor is the biggest "luck" factor in 8ball. The round robin format is great because it makes this less of a factor.

But the finals being only being one set? With two champions such as Hohmann and Manalo, the championship (and an extra $251k in prize money) was really decided by who had fewer dry breaks. Hohmann had fewer dry breaks, so he won.

Best of 3 sets should be the MINIMUM the top two should play to decide such a HUGE disparity between 1st and 2nd place prize money. If this was my tournament, I would have it best of 5 sets. They've played 5 matches a day for the previous 6 days...why not another day? Either that, or make the disparity between 1st and 2nd place prize money a lot smaller.

now these are my thoughts exactly!:D

i think everyone felt a bit shortchanged by the race to 8 finals, moreso manalo. i wonder if both players knew that going in, and if so, for how long.
