Supposedly this is a huebler shaft that has been sitting in a closet for a few years, and now there is a space between the carbonn fiber pad and the ferrule. It looks to me like someone had a repair done and the tennon came lose. The tip is still attached, but looking closely looks like the ferruel is puckered in the center beneath the tip

Super common. The ferule material he used shrank. I used to see it on almost every old Huebler I came across. Easy to fix or just have it replaced.

I think what is being said is that the ferrule simply shrunk over time while the tenon did not... but I'm no expert

Some Weird type of plastic material used for the ferrule and it shrunk. I use to see vintage guitar pick guards that use to shrink

So are you saying that this is similar to what happened to the older mc dermott ferrule the cotton fiber sucked up the moisture and the tennon pushed up thru
No! The ferrule shrank. The wood tenon is the same as it was

The Ferrule expanded in diameter and shrank in length. Usually they create the gap against the shaft instead of the tip. It probably had the weaker glue at the tip end on that one.
