I made the largest improvement in my game by getting practice games (sometimes for $5 a rack, which definitely helped a lot) in with a high-stakes player. I used to play an older gentleman who used to school the hell out of the younger players looking for action. I would help him get warmed up when he showed up about 6pm and then let his prey on the table when they were ready (or thought they were). A couple thousand later I would just shoot some victory games with him for fun once he busted his mark. Having friends that are REALLY GOOD money players definitely helps a lot.

I would say non of the above.

I assume the end to the question is what helped you the most (become a better player)

Gambling - Teaches you to be a better gambler

Leagues - Teaches you to be a better League player

Tournaments - Teaches you to be a better Tournament player

Playing for Fun - Well....If you are doing either 1 or 3....you probably don't ever "play for fun".....the "fun" part is the by product of Gambling or Tournaments.....

Now the answer to the question of what helped me the most (to be a better player) in combination with practice of course....is watching top flight players play the game.

I find that when I go to a tournament that has top flight players in the field and watch them closely, I always learn new things and just seeing someone play the game correctly tends to make my game just a little better every time.

Bottom line is to get in the same room with the best players you can find and watch close......for some it will require traveling to another town.

Gambling, practice, practice, practice, tournaments, practice, practice, practice, gambling, practice, practice, practice. Playing just "for fun" has never been fun for me, as someone else already stated. Leagues are too "sociable" for me. Watching good players helped. Asking good players questions helped. When a lot of us started playing, there weren't many books and almost no videos. Players who actually gave lessons were few and far between.

Get to play more when gambling. Too much waiting around at tournaments.
