What I hate about televised WPBA

Personally I would love to see a snooker player shooting a maximum on the 12x6 snooker table, would be pretty amazing.
Hey, poolgod ! Contact me, I have a few 147's in realmedia format in case you're interested...

Hey Yobagua and Doug,

That's showtime. If you are really in shows Yoba then you know everything is scripted and follows a formula. For every hour of filming they might get ten minutes of run time. And they cut it down to the second. There was a lot of filming in Chicago when I was there and a ten minute sequence might take ten hours. In 1970 I was in West Palm Beach and they would film a game show on the beach - forget its name - and it would take all day to get that 25 minute film clip.

It is all show biz and they are not in it to produce a product that might be exact and true. They are producing a product to satisfy the masses and make money for themselves. How many people would watch pool if they used tables with 4 inch pockets and the players kept missing? It would be dull and people would laugh at them when they missed the shots.

Remember, they produce the shows at the level the masses can understand and relate to. If you guys don't understand that, well then as Forest says, Stupid is as Supid does.

Oh, and why would you want to be on TV? Well, for the fame, the noteriety, and the GD money. Why else?

Most pool players will dump for $50 - what do you think they will do for $500 or $5,000?

I suppose you think baseball didn't put a livelier ball into the game so fans can see more homers? I suppose you think football doesn't protet the quarterback because he is the draw. Do you think they really care about him if he gets hurt? Only to the point where it will hurt the franchise and their bottom line.

Now we all know who to blame for the CRAP on TV these days :D

Actualy they are being cued to clap. I have been to a few WPBA tournaments and this is what happens. They are trying to make it more exciting for TV. Is it a good thing? It is annoying to someone that is knowledgeable, but this is what they do.

They may be cued to clap on ESPN, but whenever I've been to a woman's match or watched Karen Corr or Julie Kelly playing in Joss events; there has always been excess applauding without any cueing.

Have you ever watched boxing on HBO and have to listen to Larry Merchant, football on Monday night and have to listen to Dan Dierdorf, or listen to Jim Gray do an interview with a sports star? Man I agree that some of these commentators are all, well too much to listen to, but I love sports and I am not going to stop watching.
Go check out the WPBA and you will see some good pool. The commentators do not do all the matches. And the pockets are not as big as some on here are saying. I think some people hear that pockets are as big as the ocean so they believe it and pass it on.

I think for some people it is easier to shout about "huge pockets" than to admit a woman could kick their ass on ANY table.

I think you got something there BazookaJoe. :D

Hey Jake

Forget about what you think of me personally. I dont know you. You dont know me. But are you happy the way ESPN shows the game you love? Im not. Do you think pleasing the lowest common denominator is the best way for our game? Do you think everybody dumps to Tiger Woods because he gets bigger ratings? Or that the Yankees are in the World Series every year because they have a deal to lose to them because they have the biggest market share in NY? When I saw how Billiard Club Network did the Derby I was shocked and amazed to see pool being played in its most simple but beautiful way. When Efren Reyes played a perfect 1000% against Jimmy Wetch I thought it was a milestone. No one was told to clap. The pockets were tight and the game was showed in its entirety. I did not lose my interest in the least. I think we can learn from this and then make demands on the powers that be to change their format.
About the women. I attend a lot of their tournaments and enjoy them. I know several women pros and support them. But that doesnt exclude them from criticism. The pockets are big as they are at the Mosconi cup this year. Ralf Soquet kicked in a ball after he made a big error and hooked himself he would never make on a regulation table. They dont make golf courses easier. The pros would complain if they did. The pool pros complain now if the pockets are soft knowing that accuracy should account for something. And the biggest mistake for anyone who supports the women or is part of the womens tour is to put down the men as they have in the past. I guess thats what frustrates me as I happen to think we live in the time when we have the greatest players in pool history.

Actually they do make some golf courses easier and some have had changes made to them to make them easier.
I think we could have two threads here, "What I hate about televised WPBA" & "What I hate about women pool players". YOBAGUA, I don't think that your about the latter or trying to say the latter but some on this thread come across this way.

Sorry people, man after reading so many post and going back and forth I got two theads mixed up, but I must say that I do see a lot of people Knocking the woman players. (not so much on this thread)

Pool on ESPN Classic

Well they have espn classic...maybe someone should start a Pool Classics, that shows constant older feature matches of all sorts...one-pocket, straight pool, 9ball, 7ball, banks, snooker. Then they could have slotted 4 hour segments for a 14.1 match between good players that takes a while.

I thought the exact same thing a few days ago. Just think...Sports-Century features on Greenleaf, Mosconi, Crane, Mizerak, etc...they could do billiards as well: Hoppe, Ceulemans, Schaefer (Sr. and Jr.); I'm sure everybody else on this forum can name other greats they'd want shown. This would be a great way to introduce more people to all the rich history of the sport, to go beyond the often tiny world of TV 9-Ball...

Thanks T411. Ill go back and rethink some of the things I have said. I dont want to put down the women but am tired of the fanatics who put down mens pool and make themselves feel MANLY by brown nosing the women. I think the talent in the mens division is incredible. For one pocket, 14.1, 9-ball, bar box, 3 cushion, tournament, gambling aficionados. There are some of the greatest players ever. But it does disservice to the game by constantly putting down the men. And I think the crew on ESPN/WPBA promote such ideas in order to promote themselves.
About the golf courses. I am not an expert but I go by what I have read and see on TV. I hear Pebble would not be great was it not for its difficulties. I dont think any pro in a major competition would want an easy route to victory.
