last year, as the year before, i hooked myself up to the highest speed connection for internet access to the world snooker championship. the production was first rate. every part, of everything was based on form, the shots, the players, the game, the strategy, interviews, reviews of the afternoon match play. everything was snooker and snooker itself. very noble and professional and intresting. not ONCE was the prize money ever mentioned. i belive they get over 1 million dollars for being the world champion of snooker.
now, today, i watched the tape of the 2001 international challenge of champions, perhaps the most prestigious of all pool tournaments, certainly the most exciting. anyway, they must have mentioned the winner take all prize of $50,000 no less than 78 times, in 43 mins.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it was highly obnoxious, and made me shrill thinking, shit, is this what it means to be american? can't we use some discrection? the british are so noble, staid, rich in heritage, just watching snooker, makes you feel, you shouldn't sit in your own house in your underwear, in case they show the queen or something, but this cheap, 2nd. rate american pool, with it's "the $50,000 prize is only 5 balls away mitch" how low are we as a nation? you could tell in britian when snooker is on, at least the world championship, it seems that all of england stops! it's a big deal! sort of like the world series of baseball in america. but do we ever hear, "you know bill,---- if the yankees win, think of how much money they will win"? the anser=no, because, americans are into the game, not how much they will make money wise. i guess what i'm saying is we desperatly need barry hearn the british entreunpenuer, (pardon my spelling) to give pool, class, elegance, grace, respect, skill, and make it as noble as golf and snooker, thank you for listening, good night from new york, bernie, "the silencer" friend.

IN snookr at lest back in the days they do mention how muchg they win especially the centuries and the bonuse they claim at least back in them days i can post the link for you if you want.....the bonuses are almost nothing to compare to the money th4ey win now a days

Unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to watch the Challenge of Champions production so cannot comment on that.

But to an extent, yes, snooker over here isnt really about the money, mostly its down to who can come out on top over the week long tournaments.

By the way, its £250,000 to the winner (about $400k I think), but the sponsorship of tobacco companies for snooker has now ceased, and gone are massive prize moneys.

buckster if you saw the I.C.O.C. and listened to the commentaters, you'd get sick to your stomach. "you know he's playing for $50,000" it looks like the pressure of winning $50,000 is getting to him" the winner gets $50,000" i know he's never played for "$50,000" when we come back, they will play one game for $50,000. "allen, you know what it's like to play for $50,000" the winner of this tournament gets $50,000" ENOUGH ALREADY, ENOUGH!

I have an accu-stats tape from the 1996 Grand Prix
Puerto Rico finals. It's Rodney Morris vs Leonardo
Andam, I can't remember who was commentating (it wasn't
Grady or Billy) but every 30 seconds they would say
"This is big pool for big money!!!" it got really
irritating after awhile so I just turned off the
volume.

I know what you mean about snooker. I have a lot of
snooker tapes and it's much more elegant.

It's the cultural difference between the two nations. At every level, in every category, Americans want it loud, gaudy and fast. The British are more subdued. Sure, they have hooligans also in football but generally, they just have more class (no offense to americans -- who're proud of it anyway :) ).

As for the low pay-out in pool, maybe it's because of pool's gambling background. Sponsors just don't want to be associated with it so much. I may be wrong but I haven't heard of snooker hustlers (although I'm sure there must be some out there -- they just don't make movies about them and glorify them).

How come poker tournaments get great money? Because it's out there in the open! We're gambling and making big money out of it! Plus, it's the casinos that usually want to see gambling go mainstream thus the sponsorship dollars. I bet if more pool players just go out in the open and admit they make more money from the side bets than from the actual tournament pay-outs, we'd get a different story. i think the DCC's the right way to go. You want a circus? Give them a circus! And make a big deal of the ring games.

Jim Kelly, and probably Varner and Rempe.
PBT was ran by a mafia don then.
Don drove PBT out of business imo.

The British are a bunch of pompous, phony asses. They still think they're better than the rest of the world because they once had a global empire. They sure were noble and staid as they screwed the rest of the world to maintain their rich heritage. Half the problems in the world today are the heritage of those noble British and their empire.

Yes, Barry Hearn and Matchroom Sport is likely the only hope pool has of ever being as big and prestigous as snooker is.

Don't worry, Dubya's working on getting one for you guys too :p

I'd have thought a significant reason for mentioning the money so much would be that everyone associates it so closely with pool.
I mean, gambling is there from the grass roots, and all the big pool movies have a pretty big emphasis on the money side.

You mentioned that money wasn't so important in baseball. I guess we just look at snooker the way you do baseball.

Yo Rick. Bernie may say stuff you don't like, but you're really not coming off as so smart yourself, with your highly intellectual wit. Why not tone it down a little eh? Got to give Bernie credit: He's probably started more high activity threads than anyone else around here. Controversial perhaps...but interesting in many cases. Sure beats the typical..."uh, what kind of joint is best?" crap. If you don't have something constructive to say, why not zip it? Zip zip! :) ha ha ha. Relax.
