What I think would help pool

An electronic scoreboard that is table top size complete with timer and anything else that would help bring the audience closer to the match. Your at a tournament watching 3 different matches and its always whats the score who's winning. And after all every major sport has a scoreboard. The only problem with a timer (and a button players could hit for an extension) is that there would have to be different sounds because playerscwouldvstart getting confused.

Also look at how poker blew up. Putting microphones on players that show that these players have personalities and interviews about their backgrounds and stories that make people fall in love with the players. And of course a little editing never hurts. All the talk and drama about MD is great for tv. Every sport needs a villain, a hero, the hard luck story etc and with editing you can create a thing called drama. If a guy is miked up and swearing that's perfect. Just beep it out. Look at Freddie Deeb on espn swearing up and down with all the beeps. It creates personalities which is how people get hooked into the programming. Think simple and follow the lead of other sports/games that have paved the way.

in germany they have electronic boards with remote controls so the players can update the score and pool is not doing well there either-aint knocking ya, just sayin' that aint the solution, but the tought is nice,

Not the solution but every little bit counts. Even so it's more professional looking than moving coins around or the beads anyway.
 
Fatboy, what do you think about a tournament with say a 5000 or 10000 entry fee. Even if its eight guys round robin style I'm sure you could get enough footage between fillers and interviews to get x amount of time. I think the money would draw an audience in just like it did for poker.
 
Scoreboards, beer, girls, but also more advertising in general. Bar are great places for that as that's where the majority of the crowd usually gets in contact with pool. Pool instructors, clubs and tournaments should all be placing their advertisments near bar boxes.

We need more pool clubs where kids and adults will get trained by good instructors, and then compete. Not only we would have much more young players with great potential joining the leagues, but it would also increase the popularity of pool. If their kids would train pool, a lot of parents would become interested as well. It worked for karate, it could also work for pool.

Speaking of competitions, we all know how we like to play and compete against each other. That's what makes a certain game fun and popular. Tournaments for casual players and bar bangers with very low fees or no fee at all need to organized in every town. That would attract large masses who could test their skills without spending almost any cash. I bet most of them would eventually get hooked up and would keep trying and practising until they won. An easy way to make a name for yourself in your town, plus there would always be prizes. However, those tournaments should be played both by standard and local/bar rule sets as many bar players wouldn't enjoy standard rules. At least not until they got better.
 
I've seen numerous matches where the players were mic'd up with wireless transmitters. But the problem is that they just don't say anything. Unlike poker, you don't need to talk to your opponent in pool; in fact, it's considered sharking if you do. And most players don't talk to themselves because it will break their focus.

I wish there were more conversation during a professional pool match; the same way my friends and I play it. Yes, we're competitive -- and sportsmanlike -- but there's no problem with saying "two can play that game..." after you return a safety with an equally good safety. Or yelling at the cue ball "get off the rail!"

But, Earl Strickland talks and look at the grief he takes for it.

In any case, conversation isn't going to attract more fans. It's just to make a more interesting experience for the existing fans.
