What is a stacked leather wrap??

Message from TW

Just wanted to relay a message from TW on this topic....

"To see the historical record remain as accurate as possible....

Stacked leather rings [on a cue] may have been "tried" a long time
ago and discarded (not sure), but in the MODERN era of cuemaking Joe
Porper was the first to "introduce" it around the mid-90's.

Joe was experimenting with laminated tips and had a local leather
company punch some disks out for him. These became Joe's "Lami-Tip"...
but the company saw potential for profit and basically "swiped" all
the research work Joe had paid them for, becoming Tiger tips. Before
that happened, Joe saw the sheets of punched-out leather scraps in
their shop and envisioned the idea of stacking individual rings on a
handle core, which he did on a number of cues before his falling-out
with the leather guys.

Tiger eventually changed the idea to be one long wrap-around leather
strip (not a new idea, btw) and abandoned the leather ring approach.
However, they DID offer the individual rings to the marketplace in
bulk for a short period of time."

Interesting information.

I believe I may have seen antique cues (early 20th century) with both stacked wrap and/or spiral wrapped leather...but I am not 100% on that as I can't find the pics in my archives.

Anyway, always nice to know some history. It seems likely that the examples we have seen here were developed independent of those earlier efforts...but I don't know that for sure.

Does anybody have any pics of Porper's efforts at this?

I would love to see more of these.

I dont have any pictures, but when I bought my lathe from Joe Porper at a trade show, around 1994, he had a few of them in his booth. His cues are what gave me the idea of making some in 2002.

Ah, then we can trace the history of the idea. Very cool!
