Golf instruction videos usually state "without a good grip you can never play good golf".

What is pool's key fundamental?

Pre-Shot Routine just like in golf

Thank you for talking the time to reply

When I say fundamentals I'm talking about grip, bridge, stance, eye patterns etc.

Not to argue with your response, but to me pre-shot routine is more of a accumulation of fundamentals. The grip in golf is part of a routine.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but "don't miss" If anyone's thinking it isn't a fundamental.

Without a good feel for speed you can never play good golf.
Without a consistent swing you can never play good golf.
Without a good feel for the greens you can never play good golf.
You can have a perfect grip and be lost for those other parts.

I don't think golf has a single "key fundamental".

i agree their are combinations of fundamentals that make a good game.

My question probably doesn't narrow down to one physical fundamental.

My thought is the fundamental "key" that the rest of the stroke is based upon would be a stable bridge. I see different strokes, but they all seem to have a stable bridge as their foundation.

I remember an old article that featured Rodney Morris he was quoted saying a "steady head" was the key fundamental.

I think there are lots of players who don't move their heads but have other problems in their fundamentals that keep them from improving.

You have to see the shot accurately (or at least consistently). Your arm has to come through in the right place and at the right speed for the shot you are playing. Your bridge has to be in the right place when the tip hits the ball, and the tip better be chalked.

All of that must happen for the shot to be successful. I don't see that one fundamental dominates.

I could argue that remembering shots (and how they go) is the key fundamental.

The closest thing to a key fundamental I can think of is alignment. But again, it's combination of fundamentals that allow for proper alignment, not any one thing that you would do. But with perfect alignment, you can still pot balls with a pretty poor stroke (ie. a good player who can lazily run balls while just messing around).

If I had to pick one thing, I would have to say a consistent, repeatable stroke.

A consistent, repeatable stroke.

Definitely an accurate and repeatable stroke. Without that alignment and aiming will be inconsistent at best. Part of an accurate and repeatable depends on the other things mentioned...grip, stance, and consistent routine.

Thank you to everyone for their replies.

The more I think about it I asked an impossible question, since there are lots of factors that have to work well to play every shot.
