What is the advantage of a layered tip?

Layered tips seem to be more consistent in how they feel from one to the next. Once they are trimmed properly after the initial break-in period they should no longer mushroom. When I install them, I put a very light taper on them and they flare out even with the ferrule as they break-in. I install all layered tips this way, Morri. Talisman, Everest, Molavia, Cox, Kamui, Super Pro, Hercules. I have had very good success installing them. Only one bad batch of Talisman tips delaminated and they were bad from the factory and were replaced at no charge. I have been using Molavia layered tips on my Tim Scruggs cue for over two years now. Before that I was using Morri and decided to see if I liked Molavia better, and I do. Most of the people I install tips for want Morri if they are looking for a layered tip. Standard tip they ask for Triangle. Hope this will help you to decide. If you are in northern New Jersey, PM me and we can talk about getting you set up with a new tip. When I do my own tips, I finish the sides using the technique described at the end of item #8 of the RSB FAQ (see http://www.sfbilliards.com/faq.html ). See the part that starts with "How can I "demushroom" the edge of the tip?"gregoryg said:
It only requires sandpaper and a few household items. It does not run the risk of delaminating the leather like careless cutting does. It produces a result that looks like it was done on a lathe.
