The best handicapping is God given talent. Survival of the fittest. Let the players that ARE the best win it.

I vote Open.

Rate all the players A, B, C. A being the best and C being the worst. Give each rating a value. Such as:

A- 3
B- 2
C- 1

Add the value of both players on each team. 6 would be the best and 2 would be the worst. Give games on the wire based on the rating. For example

6= 5 games
4-5= 4 games
2-3= 3 games

That sounds pretty good.

If you want to have short races, you could just bump the entry for A/B/C, like 7/6/5 a head or something.

The best 8 ball handicapping is none at all, that way people will develop their game if they want to win.

However if you're going to play 8 ball and you want to handicap it. I would consider something like this.

At the beginning of the season every team races to 5 games. If they win the match they are a plus 1 if the lose a match they are a minus 1. The next week if a a +1 team were to play a -1 team , the spot would be the difference between their scores so in this case the -1 team would get 2 games on the wire.

Later on into the season if you had a +3 team playing a -2 team the difference is 5 and the race would be to 6 for the +3 team and 1 for the -2 team.

In this scenario the handicaps are pegged to performance. Rankings would be based on total matches won at the end of the season. So you couldn't have a team lose for most of the season and then pull off a first place win at the end of the season.

I wouldn't hold playoffs at the end in hopes that people would try their best each week to win. Obviously that option runs the risk of people at the bottom of the league just quitting because they aren't winning but with the possibility of only having to win one game to win a match hopefully that wouldn't happen. You're never going to please everyone with any handicap system. I wouldn't be surprised if no one wanted to play using the one I've described above. There's always something to complain about.

Good Luck with your league.

Handicapping is always good!

Handicapping is important to keep the game alive..., it gives the people who cant play a chance to feel good about competing with those of us that can.

Its good fro the industry when people who cant play feel motivated to go out and buy a cue and a case, glove and chalk holder because they see the players using them and they want to be like the player.

If they cant compete and win sometimes, they wont stay. All that learn how to play inorder to compete is 1960's thinking and that part of the reason the game is not going anywhere.

We have to bring more people in and keep them in.

If you want to give weak players a legitimate chance to win, handicap balls at the end of the run before shooting the 8 ball.

It will be important to watch players progress and adjust handicaps regularly.

If it's a local tournament and you know all the players...just divide the players in half and have A players and B players and have a blind draw for partners.

Each team will have an A player and B player for a partner.
