What is the diffrence between Irish Linnen and Leather or lizard skin?

I am thinking of getting a cue, and want to know what the diffrence is. Like how it feels, is one better for dry hands, and wet sweaty hands? Things like that.

I had a custom cue made with a leather wrap (wanted snake skin but sadly the maker didn't have access to any at the time). The leather wrap is very sensitive to surrounding humidity and generally causes my back hand to sweat. One of the reasons I never use the cue.

Linen doesn't seem to interact with humidity as much. I suspect that lizard skins would be the same way, but I've never actually used a lizard-skin wrapped cue.

I have all three....plus a no wrap cue. It really boils down to personal preference. Oddly enough I like all four about equally. I hate nylon wrap though.

I generally find that lizard, leather, and no wrap tend to get a little "tacky", which can be a good thing, since you're hand does not tend to slip. I find that I need to "polish" the no wrap more often, and if my hands are sweating it can become slightly bothersome. Linen feels good to me, particularly when it gets slightly damp from sweat. Without the sweat, I feel that the cue is alittle "slick" with a linen wrap.

my 2 cents.

Doug

Try stingray skin. It's covered in tiny, bony round scales, providing an excellent grip. It was used in Samurai armor, and to cover the hilts of swords, axes, bows, and other weapons where sweaty palms would be a distinct disadvantage.

I remember reading somewhere that a study showed a no-wrap cue slips the least, dry or sweaty, and even less than leather.

Leather has a nice tacky feel. If it has a texture, it's less sticky feeling.

Lizard is a nice compromise between the low-slip of no-wrap and tacky leather. It doesn't get damp and clammy like leather, yet has a nice feel. It doesn't absorb moisture like leather. To me it feels like textured plastic, which sounds like a negative thing, but actually feels good.

Irish Linen is the slickest of all, especially when dry. But that is certainly not to say it's the worst. Because linen is slicker, I think it demands more careful control when changing direction, going from backswing to forward swing. That may actually make you play better.

That's all I've used for 43 years. Never had a cue slip out of my hand.

I have a hankering for stingray, though. Maybe next cue. :D

Sweat?

I recommend linen or cork if your hands sweat a lot. If they usually stay fairly dry > you pickem'

So where can I buy some of this stingray skin? WalMart, Target?

Google is your friend. There are lots of suppliers out there.

eBay is rife with stingray hides, too.

I'd tell my cuemaker what I want and let him find it.

I have a kangaroo leather on one of my cue .. very soft and tacky. This is by far, my favorite leather wrap, followed by black smooth. Tiger stack leather also feels good and tacky.

Lizard wraps and less tacky ... only problem with lizard wraps are that I can feel the seam no matter how good it was put on.

I also have a ostrich wrap, it's got bumps all over it.

My personal preference is wrapless .. it looks nice and feels right to me.

I fell in love with the stack leather the first time I picked it up and have been using it ever since. If you know anyone with a cue with stack leather, ask to hold it, it has a really nice feeling.

Cork for me.. Hands down.

It's all about preference. My hands tend to sweat a bit and I LOVE a cork wrap. Paul Drexler does a fantastic cork wrap. Not sure about other makers??
I own a leather wrapped cue, no wrap, linen wrap and REAL Lizard too.. I prefer the cork by far.
Just one persons preference.
