if you don’t own a DESIGNATED BREAK Cue. What Weight of Break Cue do you BREAK BEST WITH?

I ask this question as my Playing Cues are in Weight between 19.0, and 19.30 Ounces.

I do not OWN A DESIGNATED Break Cue but like to find a House Cue that is Straight, and Weighing between 16.0 & 17.0 Ounces. As that Weight works best fgor me.

Do any of you find that you Break better with a Lighter, than your Playing Cue?

Break Cue

I use a 21 oz. Meucci 97-15. I play with a 19oz. Kikel cue. I need the weight due to a week wrist. I had an operation about 14 months ago on the grip wrist and have constant pain. I wanted to avoid going under the knife again but it ain't working out. I am going to set up the operation some time next month. I need my right hand to do my job.
Purdman  :(

18oz sledgehammer. I definitely think lighter is the way to go.

guy i know bought a 25 oz break cue....thinking like most that heavier would break better but i broke with that thing and i couldnt do anything with it. It truly is all about cue speed, at least to me.

20oz Fury....

Reason why because, 18 to light for me
21oz to heavy

20 is just right.

I prefer something a little heavier than my playing cue but I try to experiment. I think I just need to work on my break because my sledge is 19 but my Omen is 20. More often than not, I have a hard time breaking with my sledge because it feels so light but sometimes if I break just right my sledge breaks like a monster. My omen is pretty consistent so I prefer it instead. Its really weird. Im interested in the Buster from Showcase Billiards but it weights between 14 to 16oz which is like a feather compared to most cues. Im not quiet sure the logic behind that so I guess Ill have to try one out.

As close as possible...

I think you playing and break cue should be the same or as close as possible...this gives you a familiar 'feel' whether your breaking or shooting...

I shoot with a 19.25 oz Schon LTD
I break with a 19.00 oz Stinger

I have just purchased a stinger break/jump cue and I was wondering what you all thought on these types of break cues unfortunatley I don't know the weight of the cue I will be receiving so could anyone tell me what the standard weight of these cues are? :D

My breaking cue is 17 oz.

I once experimented with different weight cues - hitting the cue ball only to see how many times I could make the cue ball bounce back and forth on the table**. I did the best (fastest speed) with a 17 oz. (got the most bounces back and forth).

**Warning - Practicing breaking by hitting the cue ball without a rack on the table can be dangerous to you! The cue ball can become slightly airborne, hit the far rail, then bounce back up in the air and hit you smack in the face. I had a few close misses, so I only do this when wearing a baseball catchers mask now.

At first the cue ball was flying past me about two feet to the right or left. But my aim was getting better and one time the cue ball flew past my head over my shoulder. That was when I went to a sporting goods store and bought a baseball catchers mask.

Why do i get the feeling that one day i'll be able to say "HURT LIKE HELL DIDN'T IT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?"
hehehe :D:D:D

The mask was a good idea.

The answer is yes, it did hurt like hell. When I was first learning the game the first guy to show me some things used to stand at the head rail and jump the ball off the end rail and catch it. Well, I thought this was pretty cool, still do kind of...lol, and would try to do this from time to time. I got pretty good at it and one day a few years ago, I was jumping the ball off the side rail and catching it. Well, there was one that was coming back a little low so I put my hand there to block it, but the cue ball went under my hand and hit me in the, uh, object balls...lol. Hurt like hell, but I, of course, tried to act like it didn't phase me and hope that no one saw what happened.

The cue that I prefer to break with is about 15 oz. It's a reworked house cue with a custom shaft.

A friend has a B/J cue that when it's complete only weighs about 12 oz. and a phenolic tip. I've not broken with it, but it seems to get the job done quite well.

18.5oz, same as my playing cue..... for now. Of course, that's only when I'm not playing 1p. :D

First off, my break cue is a 21oz Dufferin Shadow. With that said ...

The 'jump-off-the-rail' shot is very handy on occasion, and I have used it to escape some otherwise 'impossible' snookers, and fouling on some as it is hard to control. I saw Alain Martel perform one brilliantly in the most recent Border Battle. Anyway, one night years ago my brother-in-law and I were at a local bar which has 4 tables side by side. At closing we were the only people around, and we were pretty much done (take that how you will :D ), but someone had the bright idea that we should shoot from one table to the next. I said I could shoot over the next table onto the third table, and proceded to line one up, aiming the opposite direction. My buddy commented that I was drunk (true) and should likely aim towards the target table ... wrong ! WHACK, the ball jumps 20 feet off the rail onto the third table :p Too much fun ... which is what pool is meant to be imo. I can see how people get hurt by this shot, I've had some close calls myself during practice sessions.

I break with a 17.5 oz Predator BK.. a lighter break cue is more effective. Easyer to controle and faster. A powerfull break is a result of speed behind the cue ball and square hit.

Just firing the cue ball into the end rail, without a target for disciplined practice, is bad practice... PERIOD

The game of Pocket Billiards is about precision. The break shot is the most complex shot in the game & does require accuracy of hit to be effective.

Break Cue options are many.

I prefer a dedicated Cue for performing the break shot. The larger diameter shaft & hard tip assist me in striking the cue ball hard & accurately.

My play cue is 19 oz & my break cue weighs the same.

It is common knowledge that a heavier cue is more accurate, but the lighter cue is better for position play... having that info leaves me to believe a "middle of the road" approach is the best.

Accuracy on the break shot is by far more important than an errant fast ball.

Breaking

I break with a 20.2 oz Shurtz cue, the same as my playing cue although
made for breaking.

As I have already stated I have purchased a stinger break/jump cue (should be here in 10 days), but what I want to know is do I have to be strong in order to make a decent break off shot or is the break shot not about strength but more about power and timing?

I broke with a 26 oz. Star Cue from Miami Beach for 5 years on the Bar-Box, with a 14 MM tip. Now and for the past 20 years I have used a 19 oz. break cue. Lighter/Heavier...dont matter, its the contact you make that counts!!

I was parcticing hitting the one ball squar stopping the cueball, practicing a soft break, and i hit the one ball a little to hard, and it hit the back rail flew up and hit a girl in the back of the leg. I was embarasses, she said it was her fault for standing there, i was like ok, god i love being a kid.
