What Kind of Wood Is This?

Do You remember that piece I had that looks like wenge. Well I know it was another type, cause I actually had some wenge in that same batch back when I got them in a lot together, altough they were close, the wenge btw was closer in color to the one in this thread then the other piece I speak of. The only ID I had on that piece was a piece of masking tape wrapped around It that said Guata in marker, but something had been added in pencil that can no longer be read well, cause It has faded. The grain does look the same on that piece, but It does not have that honey color or the light grain like the piece pictured. The color in the piece pictured looks like the B Cherry to me, but the grain pattern is throwing me off, and away from that, and I see more of a palm or wenge type pattern. I know the grain pattern is alittle wider on one then the other, but then the picture is magnified also, so I really don't have a clue what It is LOL.:D

BTW that Piece I mentioned Is one of those pics We discussed, and the pattern looks totally different in the picture from what It does in person.

If the one labeled Guata has the color of maple, it likely was Guatambu. It is used in flooring and sometimes in guitars. Pau genus.

Even though it sort of looks like red palm it's a crap shoot because woods can vary so much...here's some red palm from a guy I buy from...

Wonderful picture (and a nice piece with dense coloring), and glad the end grain is shown.

Isn't the base color of the wood in this pic light, and the striping and graining darker? The end grain helps to show what the base color of the wood is...the end faces are light with many dark dots. That is the opposite of the original piece. Plus there are no distinct dots mixed in between the lining of the original pic as there are in palmwood.

I think I recognize the vendor from the pic... :p

Is that black palm?? I've seen some that is as grainy as the red palm I posted...

That is brazilian cherry...or jatoba...one of my original thoughts, which someone agreed with. I knew I had seen brazilian cherry with the lighter color veining before, I just didn't have a good piece of it in the shop.

I thought that too, due to the fact, from what I could see of the letters in the faded pencil, It looked like that's what It said, but the wood is totally different. I have seen Guatambu before in pictures online, flooring mostly as You say, and It does look simular to maple in color, this is alot darker though. I showed You a pic once before and Your guess was wenge I believe, which actually was a close guess. I would'nt have known the difference had I not had a piece of wenge on hand at the time to compare the two side by side. This piece has more of a darker brown & faded charcoal color I suppose is the best I can describe It.

To the point someone has posted a Zyler Wenge sneaky for sale on here, and someone has questioned him whether it is palmwood. Maybe a coincidence?

I worked with some Wenge pieces at Zylr's shop one time.
Will never use it.
Ugly wood . Finish hog too.
Palmwood? What's the difference? Another ugly splintery wood?
:)

I've used wenge before and think the grain is very nice looking..as for splintery, I've had great results turning it down with my router setup....

I gotta quit using chisels. :D
I just don't think it's a pretty wood.
Kinda light too.
