What makes a "World" chaimpionship?

There are some tournaments billed as "World" titles. Yet any of the other big tournaments have many international players. The U.S. Open usually has Philipino, US, Asian, Austalian, British and more players. Sounds pretty World to me.

Are there specific bullet points that would make one tournament a World title? Say if it's invitation only or something?

Or you can pay the WPA a sanctioning fee. You can invite whoever you want, too. The players do not have to be ranked with any organizational governing body of professional pool either. The promoter has the discretion to invite Tom Thumb if he wants to.

I wish world championships were open to anyone in the world that wanted to play. I don't like the idea of having a world championship that is actually an invitational. jmho.

How can you call something a World championship, if you don't play anyone, and everyone in the world! Invitation only, is way to opinion oriented! Because everyone would invite different people, and snub different people!

The about-to-start World 8-Ball Championships are open to everyone. The World 9-Ball Championships are also open to everyone, as are the 14.1 Championships. You can qualify through your national organization or you can enter an on-site qualifier just before the main competition. It is usual for the organizer and the hosting country to get some number of "wildcard" invitations to hand out. I think that's not unreasonable. The majority of entries are not invitations.
 
OK, but still, why is it called a "World" championship? Sure it sounds important, but is it just a name? What's stopping 4 other World 9-ball tournaments from starting up? Is it just a trademarked name for just another open tournament?

Isn't there a tournament (aside from the Mosconi Cup) where the top players from each continent get invited to? Now that would be a true World Championship.

The WPA is the world governing body for pool. It is recognized as such by the WCBS, which is the world governing body for all cue sports. The WCBS is recognized by the IOC as the world governing body for cue sports.

The Mosconi Cup is a set of exhibition matches promoted and produced by Matchroom Sport, which has also produced the World 9-Ball Championships for ten years or so. I think the Mosconi Cup is sanctioned by the WPA, but the results have no official standing, so far as I know. For ranking purposes, it would be unfair to include points for participation in the Mosconi Cup since it is invitational. Although it is invitational, I think Matchroom does (do) consider finishes in major tournaments in the selection. For example, this year I think Daryl Peach was selected for his win in the WC 9-Ball, and Stepanov was selected because of his ranking on the Eurotour.

The WPA World Championships are exactly what you describe above, for the most part. Each national federation (or continental confederation) selects representatives to go to it. In addition, there are qualifiers at the site as I mentioned. If you wanted to be World Champion, all you would have to do is show up early at the next one and not lose. Or, you could qualify through your national federation.
