what other custom cues hit like a SW?

My friend and i were talking about my fascination with Southwest cues. i had very few chances to play with one, but on one occasion, i got to use a jerry franklin to practice before a tourney. my cue was in the shop getting retipped and i was just playing lights out with the SW. i thought i was all in my mind at first, but i swear, it played so damn good! i've been searching for another cue that hit like that since.

i don't think i'm ever going to pay upwards of 2k for a cue. all i want is a plain jane player. so if anyone can recommend a cuemaker or brand whose cues feel like the hit of a jerry SW, please speak up!

oh btw, i'm looking to spend about 800.

also, what gives the SW its distinctive hit?

Give Leon Sly a shot his cues hit great I think they hit as good as any cue maker out there, he is making me a nice 4 point 4 veneer cue with an ivory joint and some ivory diamonds in the butt I have one of his cocobola sneaky petes and I love it.

Southwest

I think that Steve Klein cues hit and look a little like Southwest. I have both, and a Southwest is a Southwest, nothing else hits exactly like one. But if I was playing mostly with my Southwest, and changed for some reason, I could get used to one of my Klein's real easy. They have a firm, crisp hit, they even have 3/8-11 pins similar to Southwest (one is a G10)

These cues have no nicks or scratches, my pics are really bad this time, the only used cue is the inlayed cue

Hit? How does one define hit? As I see no way to measure it.

I believe each Cue has it own unique hit because of suttle difference in wood, grain pattern, whee the wood was grown, etc.

If you are at the VF show, I would talk to barry cameron. His stuff hits pretty stiff. Nice cues.

Starkey, Sugartree, Ed Young, DPK. Starkey is the best value.

Go to VF and do the Pepsi "Cue" Challenge

I have owned probably 15 southwest cues in my lifetime and right now I have the best playing southwest I've ever owned. Its a six point maple forearm cocobolo points with veneers and full rings.

Recently I picked up a rick howard cue from dpence on here and wow this cue plays EXACTLY the same. The rick howard is also a six point cocobolo with veneers on half the points with ring work.

Get a rick howard six poiner in the same configuration as I described above and you won't be let down I assure you. Plus you will spend less than 1k.

Sowest hit

A $1,000+ Shurtz cue hits almost identical to a Sowest. Of course, how you have it made will affect the hit too. But, I directly compared my $1,100 Shurtz to a $2,800-3,300 Sowest (Fancy Sowest) and I could only detect only the slightest, and I mean slightest, difference in the hit and feel.

But the balance of the Shurtz was better for me, a little more forward balanced than the Sowest, not a lot, but some.

I can't believe some of the ridiculous answers I've read in this thread.

First off, you're not going to find a cue that hits just like a South West. You want a cue that hits/plays/feels like a South West? Then buy a South West. Don't want to spend $2k+ for a cue? Get used to the feel of something different.

But I have to say, I've never played with a Steve Klein or a Leon Sly that felt even close to a South West. That's not to say that they are bad playing cues. They just don't have the same feel as a South West. And from that picture, I don't see any similarities to South West cues except they all have wood in them.

And with all due respect, Carmelis most certainly do NOT play like South Wests.

You want something that's a plain jane and plays somewhat similar? Buy a pj Bluegrass for $900-$1,100. In my opinion, they play better.

I bought my Dan Dishaw because it hit and played very similar to the two Southwest cues that I owned. Probably why I've kept it for 13 years now. To be honest, I haven't played with anything since that feels anywhere near the same. I got a deal on my Dishaw and Dan's cue aren't cheap any more.

Rick Howard calls his line of cues "Mace" cues. This may be some type of urban ledgend, but I heard years ago that Rick had ban-sawed a Southwest into two halfs so that he could determine what produced that distinctive "hit". However he did it, he accomplished his goal of building the Southwest "hit" into his Mace cues. They do hit exactly the same. Only difference, you can own the Mace cue for a lot less money.

The feel of a SouthWest

I have heard that Zylr cues have a similar feel and hit to a SouthWest. I have hit balls with both, but not enough to really get a feel for them. You can get a ZYLR sneaky for $800 or less.

Rick Howard is the closest to SW that I have used. Bluegrass and Pete Omen have a softer hit than a SW to me.

Alex Brick would be another option since he uses a Kersenbrock Taper

I've played with a few SW. My buddy has a Eric Crisp cue that hits very similar to the SW that I have played. Very nice, stiff hit. You can really feel the shots with his cue. FWIW IMO

I love my Jacoby, and Dave and his son were awesome to work with :)

Points to Marissa for the most random thought I've seen in a thread in a long time. I'm sure you do love your Jacoby. But are you REALLY trying to compare that to a South West or are you just syaing you love it?

Cause if you want to hijack this thread and just make it about stating this we love, I'll jump in:

puppies
kittens
candy bars
long walks on the beach
video games
campfires

(should I keep going?)
