Was it one piece or laminated? Was it hard, medium, or soft?

If it was hard and not a layered tip it was probably a SUMO tip. They are no longer being made but if you look around you may find someone who has a few.

Sumo tips are not red after installing.
Probably a Super Pro or Buffalo Pro.

The OP did not say it was still red. He said the cue owner said it was red when new. Just sayin'

Hi Larry,

It sure sounds like a Sumo to me. I have one that is maybe 30 years old if interested. (at least 25 years old) :)

Sumo was a very good tip. It's a shame it is gone. I use to use them inside of phenolic for break jump tips.

Red tips/cuesoul

If it was laminated it could of been a cuesoul tip.
I like these tips much.

Tips install and play great-IMO.
Great ppl to deal with.
