What tip to use?

I am a decent pool player, however, would be easy pick'ns to most of the users here. I am reserecting my billiards life (kids have grown) and need to replace my tips. I have a nice 20 year old Huebler in great shape with two shafts. My new table is on the way. Any guidance of tip choice would be awesome.

As a general rule hard tips last a little longer & don't mushroom on the sides, as much as softer ones. However, because of that hardness, you have to keep the top surface scuffed up a little more often, than softer tips. Soft tips tend to collapse around the surface of the ball a little more & this grips the ball, a little more on off center hits. Layered tips can be had from soft to hard & resist mushrooming the best of all tips. Because of the construction the hards are very hard & the softs are a little harder than their single layered counterpart. They are also the most expensive. Hope this helps. You can scuff & shape a layered tip, but they should not be picked or they may come apart...JER

Through research, I'm considering getting a moori med for play and a french leather for break. In the past I only french leather for everything. Moori's are pretty expensive but considering how much I will replace it it doesn't seam that big a deal. Are the other layered tips just as good and how about the french leather?

I know everyone praises Moori but I love Triangle tips and they are about $15 installed.

Just some food for thought.

I use triangles too, albeit very hard ones (this is getting freaky Koop, lol).

I've used Mooris, Molavias, Tigers, Snipers, Talismans (hated those)...and finally settled on the Triangle.

:D You ain't kidding buddy. Next thing you'll tell me you are also gonna have Mike Webb make you a cue ( hint, hint )

Start talking to ScottR as well. I thought we were long lost twins based on our thought process :)

I have tried every tip out there. Always go back to a Triangle. Cheap, dont mushroom and hold chalk. I like to cut them in half before installation because I dont like high tips.

I have a Moori med on one cue and a Tiger Everest on another, I think I like the Tiger Everest best. The Moori seems to require constant attention on the chalk as it doesn't seem to hold it as well as the Everest. I have had several miscues with the Moori and none with the Tiger tip.

What size?

You guys have proven to provide some admirable advise. I'm going with the Triangle and Everest because they are made in the USA. Now what size do I get? My shafts are 13mm. Do I get the 13mm tips or do I get the 14mm and trim it down?

14mm, trim it down. Are you doing this yourself?

I will be doing it myself. I live in an area that is void of a good reputable pool hall. I am quite meticulous and have always done it in the past. I have purchased some tools like a burnisher, top sander, trimer, and former. I have never used a burnisher before but the concept makes sence.

tip

Another tip not mentioned is the Talisman Pro. I always recomend these when someone ask what they should try. I sell the Talisman 10 to 1 of all the other tips I sell combined, and 90% of the people come back to let me know how much they like the tip. I put them on every cue I build.

I forgot to mention this but I do the exact same thing as well.

Is this done with all tips or just the Triangle? I will assume I use the bottom half but could I actually get two tips out of one? Does cutting the tip down in effect make the tip harder?
