I imagine they are doing this due to the fact that triangles are really thick. I would only try to get one tip from it myself, and usually instead of actually cutting it in half I will glue it up then just crown the tip until I get the desired thickness, but there's more then one way to skin a cat, so the other way will work also.
Cutting them down does'nt nessarally make them harder, but playing with the tip might as it compresses. I recently took some triangles put them in a vice applied pressure, then backed off. The tip went back to shape almost instantly, so they are still kind of spongy. After that I got an idea and soaked them in a solution then clamped them in My vice and let them dry with the applied preasure. After they dried they held the shape, and were about half the original thickness. They are now very hard, but still have that rougher texture as to hold chalk better then most hard tips. I have no idea how they are going to play, as I have not installed one yet, but they seem interesting enough coming from someone that shoots with a hard moori.
