What tips do you use??

Shoot yea I just got on the triangle bandwagon. So far so good. I honestly believe it has something to do with vegetable/naturally tanned leather vs chromium tanned. Just try to burnish a triangle or lepro. They are chromium tanned, which virtually means no glazing. Kamui burnishes up well, so no wonder why they get shiny burn spots, same with lepro. See this interesting article which, along with a good portion of the Az community, convinced me to switch https://www.carryology.com/insights/chrome-vs-vegetable-tanned-leather/

Actually, the Triangle receives a combination of chromium, and veg tan, and the Le Pro is veg tanned. Hope that helps.

All the best,
WW

Ouch meant to say elkmaster is chromium tanned not lepro, that’s a result of some noontime coronas. That’s cool, I didn’t know that triangle was a combination of the two. This is an awesome thread btw, so is the chin on the cue one. My play has improved immensely

In the last few years, I've played with several types of tips:

Triangle
Le Pro
Kamui Black SS
Kamui Black Medium
G-2 Soft
Ultra-skin Medium
Ultra-skin Soft

Of those, I now use Ultra-skin soft on every cue that I play with and I'll change the others to that when they are due for a tip change.

You can't beat the price of Ultra-skins and they play as well as some of the high-dollar tips.

I get so much action on these tips, that there isn't a Sunday that goes by that somebody doesn't come up and ask me what kind of tip I use.

Do the ultra skins mushroom? Do u have to reshape them often?

Do the ultra skins mushroom? Do u have to reshape them often?

I have never had to reshape them on the sides on any cue I have put them on and they have never "mushroomed" on the top either. I use my tip tool to kind of roughen up the surface, but have never had to do anything else.

I break with them on my playing cue and they have never got beat out of shape.

I seldom ever miscue with them, too.

I am speaking only for the soft tips. I didn't really like the hit of the mediums, so I never spent enough time with them to give a fair assessment.

First off... Ultra Skins are IMO a good tip, not only for the price, they are good regardless of price....
It's the price that gives them an edge for several of my customers.

I am not sure what HawaiianEye is doing as far as his burnishing process but in my experience every soft tip will mushroom at least once of twice before it settles in.
Installing and shooting with a soft tip, let alone breaking with it without expecting it to mushroom (at least initially) is some kind of voodoo magic.

Ultra Skins are well worth consideration. I have installed 40+ with repeat customers and friends of customers wanting the same tips.
Like all soft tips, they will mushroom; however, once dressed once of twice after a few sessions, they are good to go with only periodic scuffing.

Personally, I have been a huge fan of the SIB tips because I needed brown for contrast vs Ultra Skin black.
A customer recently gave me a Searing Precision tip in trade for an install; after a few sessions with it, I would be perfectly fine with making it my full time player

Here is my tip with hundreds of hours of play.

I have the voodoo magic.

I have never done anything to the sides of the tip since it was installed.

I can't count the number of racks that have been played with this tip and I have broken with it hundreds of times.

It isn't "perfect", but it isn't anything that I would waste any time trying to make perfect. There aren't many soft tips that will take the pounding that this tip has taken and not mushroom, but none of my Ultra-skin soft tips have ever mushroomed.

It's about time I replace it anyway. I like tips when they are "tall".

Triangle When this tip wears out it will be replaced with the only Kamui Black Medium I have left. This is a break Cue.
Kamikaze Black Medium
Kamui Black SS
Kamui Black S

Another vote for the good old fashioned Triangle. Having tried them all, I don't think there is a better one. Very coarse, you can pick the mediums from the medium-hards, by the look of the tops, depending on your preference.

Of course, some will chime in saying wrong. You must spend more!!!

All the best,
WW

What does that mean?

Your going to use a kamui black on your break cue? Why?

I'm not a fan of Kamui tips, but I don't see anything wrong with putting one on a break cue.

I just put Ultra-skin softs on the cues that I use for breaking. I had a White Diamond on one of them until it popped off, but it really wasn't my cup of tea.

I can hit the cue ball hard enough that I don't need a super hard tip or a specialized cue.

I prefer "controlling the cue ball" on the break over "body slamming" them and letting the cue ball go flying around the table.

That is one of the reasons I like breaking with my playing cue. I use that cue for every other shot and I know how the cue ball is going to react with it. I sometimes hit the cue ball as hard as a break shot during the course of a game, if I need to maneuver the cue ball four or five rails or do an end-to-end power draw.

I don't know why people are afraid to break with their playing cue. I did it for decades and all my cues, custom and production, are still in perfect condition. The only reason I have break cues now is that I got them for free or next to nothing.

It is a cue that I use to break with and trust me the Kamui Black Mediums, two, that I bought are or play harder than a triangle.

When I first tried Kamui tips I ordered two Mediums. Installed one on my OB Classic shaft and it sounded like and played like the WB tips on my Palmer #17. So I then tried a Soft and it was to hard. A Super Soft plays the same on that shaft as a Kamikaze black medium.

I don't know if they are bogus tips are not. But they look and shape like Kamui tips. But they are hard as rocks.

It's ether put it on the Cue that I break with or through it in the garbage and it cost to much for that

Yea they are hard and also glaze over. Mine lasted about a month before it went in the garbage. Triangles for me now.

I keep reading about Kamui tips glazing on this forum. But I have never had a Kamui tip glaze. And I see other players with Kamui tips and I have never heard them complain about glazing ether.

I started using Magic Chalk before I started using the Kamui tips. I love the way Tiger Everest tips play for about two months and then they start glazing and I cut them off. I am tempted to install an Everest on one of my shafts just to see if it glazes with the Magic Chalk.

Strange how some people swear by kamui while others swear at kamui. My kamui came from seyberts. Maybe the humidity here in the Philippines had something to do with it. Never again!
